CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team notched a 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon, surrendering just one singles point to visiting UNC Greensboro at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex. Despite the lopsided final score, four of the six singles matches were close, three-set decisions.
Coastal's fourth straight win improves its record to 4-1 on the season. UNCG, meanwhile, remains winless at 0-2 with the loss.
Coastal opened the scoring with doubles, winning on all three courts to take an early 1-0 advantage.
Laura Mary and Cari Berry opened the match with a 6-3 win on No. 3, and Romane Delay and Marie Babayan followed on the second court with a 6-4 victory to clinch the point. Libby Scott and Sara Bondar rounded out doubles at No. 1, topping Sourneya Anne and Amy Ellis 7-5.
Berry (No. 6) and Delay (No. 2) delivered the first two singles points for the Chants, notching the only straight-sets deicsions on the singles courts.
Bondar sealed the match in Coastal's favor on court five, besting Corrine Blythe in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-0.
Mary added Coastal's final point on the fourth court, and Sarah Swinderski picked up UNCG's lone tally at No. 3 with a three-set win over Babayan.
"We played against a gritty UNCG team today," said Catherine Hewitt. "Just about every singles match was extremely close, but our girls found a way to put it together and win. I'm proud of them and look forward to practice this week as we prepare for some tough matches coming up."
Coastal remains at home to host College of Charleston at 3 p.m. on Feb. 10.
