FARMVILLE, Va. - The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team suffered an 84-76 loss at Longwood on Tuesday night in a back-and-forth game played inside the Lancers' Willett Hall.
Coastal Carolina (11-17, 6-13) led by three points entering the fourth, but surrendered that lead three minutes into the quarter after Deborah Headen and Kyndal Skersick hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Longwood (7-20, 4-15) in front for the final time in a game that saw 12 ties and 20 lead changes.
Longwood outscored the Chants 34-23 in the fourth quarter, including an 11-0 run that gave the Lancers their largest lead of the night (nine points) at the 5:08 mark.
Headen finished as the game's leading scorer with 24 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the floor overall, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, and sinking all six of her attempts from the line. Skersick scored all 11 of her points in the second half, and hit two 3-pointers during Longwood's 11-0 fourth-quarter run.
Eboni Gilliam added 16 points for the Lancers, and Ciarah Bennet contributed 10.
Longwood shot 43.1 percent from the field, but had trouble keeping possession as the Chants recorded 20 steals ââ'¬" the most against a Big South opponent this season ââ'¬" and the Lancers turned the ball over a total of 28 times. Coastal managed to score 25 points off of Longwood's turnovers.
Coastal shot 39.4 percent from the floor and was led by the 20 points of Ced Gibson, who has reached or eclipsed that mark in five of Coastal's last seven games. Gibson shot 9-of-19 from the floor, but was held without a 3-pointer as the Chants finished just 4-of-19 from beyond the arc, their second straight game being held to four or fewer long-range makes.
The Chants managed to dominate down low, however, outscoring the Lancers 38-18 in the paint, and winning the rebound battle 45-40.
Coastal was called for 34 personal fouls ââ'¬" a season-high ââ'¬" as Dionne Parker, Patricia Albert and Nicole Isaacs all reached the five-foul limit. The Chants' foul troubles allowed Longwood 43 attempts at the line, of which the Lancers made 30. Gilliam joined Headen in going 6-of-6 from the stripe, while Bernett made 5-of-8.
The two sides nearly played to a stalemate in the first half as Coastal took a one-point lead into the locker room. The lead changed sides 13 times over the first two quarters, and neither team led by more than six points.
Coastal widened its lead to as many as four points in the third quarter before Bennett hit a 3-pointer with a minute remaining to cut the Chants' lead to just one. Olivia Carlton and Darriel Banyard each added a free throw before the period ended, giving Coastal its three-point lead heading into the fourth.
The Chants return home to play their final regular season game at The HTC Center on Saturday, as the Winthrop Eagles come to town for a 2 p.m. tip. Saturday's game will also feature Senior Day recognition of Stephanie Isaacs and Nicole Isaacs.
