
Coastal Carolina Places 12th at General Hackler Championship

MYRTLE BEACH - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team shot a 294 in the final round and improved to finish in a tie for 12th with a three-round score of 890 at its own General Hackler Championship, presented by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday and played at the par 72, 7,233-yard Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
South Carolina, ranked 19th nationally, won the 54-hole event with a score of 841. Virginia, ranked 24th, was runner-up with a score of 848. In addition to USC and Virginia, the 15-team field featured #16 North Carolina, #43 North Carolina State, #32 Texas A&M, #30 North Florida, #49 Charleston Southern and #44 East Carolina.
The Gamecocks' Matthew NeSmith was the clubhouse leader with a 9-under par 207 (73-67-67). Virginia's Jimmy Stanger (70-667-71) birdied hole 15 and was 9-under with three holes to play. However, he turned in three pars to tie NeSmith for medalist honors. NeSmith and Stanger tied for the second-lowest, 54-hole score in tournament history with their 207.
The Chanticleers were led by Alfredo Ruiz. The junior posted a final round, even par 72 - posting three bogeys and three birdies - to move up four spots into a tie for 31st (75-75-72=218). With his 71 in round two and 72 Sunday, Ruiz, who has 20 rounds played this season, has eight rounds of par of better for the year and 15 for his career. On Sunday, Ruiz birdied two of his first three holes and made the turn at 2-under as well. He suffered a pair of bogeys on holes 5 and 6 and closed his round with three pars to record his 72.
Thadd Obecny II tied for 52nd with a score of 76-73-75=224. He had a bogey on his opening hole (hole 10) and went to 2-over with a bogey on hole 14. However, he posted back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17 to make the turn at even par. Obecny would card six pars and three bogeys on his back nine for his 3-over 75.
Freshman Lius Ruiz shot up five spots thanks to a final round 73 to place 61st (78-76-73=227). He carded three birdies with four bogeys to shoot 1-over on Sunday. Olle Widegren moved up four spots on Sunday as he posted a final round 74 (77-77-74=228). The junior had 12 pars, four bogeys and two birdies to shoot 2-over.
Three Chants played as individuals with Daniel Overas tying for 64th (77-75=77=229), Harrison Frye tying for 71st (78=77-77=232) and Josh Pisarri finishing in 82nd (81-75-90=246).
Coastal Carolina will return to action April 2-3 at the annual Augusta 3M Invitational, played at Forest Hills Country Club.
