AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team shot an opening-round 290 in the morning and, despite shooting a 291 in the afternoon, moved up two spots to stand in 11th place (581) at the 3M Augusta Invitational, played at the par 72, 7.231-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.
The event will conclude with 18 final holes on Sunday.
Host and 35th-ranked Augusta leads the 15 team field -- featuring nine of the nation's top 45 teams -- with a score of 18-under par 558 (275-283). The rest of the top five includes #2 Texas (561), #4 Illinois (561), #14 South Florida (562) and #3 Georgia (569). Other top teams include #40 New Mexico (6th-t), #44 Tennessee (6th-t), #38 Pepperdine (8th-t) and #32 Houston (10th).
Ryan Carpenter led CCU through the first 36 holes. He shot an opening-round 2-under par 70 and posted a 2-over 74 in the second round to stand in a tie for 29th with an even par total of 144. In the morning session and starting on hole 18, Carpenter was 2-under par through 10 holes thanks to birdies on holes six and nine. He dropped a shot on hole 13, but got back to 2-under with a birdie on the par 4 15th. Carpenter closed his round with a bogey on hole 16 and a birdie on hole 17 for his 2-under 70. In the second round, Carpenter had bogeys on holes one, four and seven. He had a birdie on the ninth hole and ran off eight straight pars to close his round for a 2-over 74.
Olle Widegren turned in a 4-over 74 in his first round and raced up 13 spots into a tie for 39th with a second round 72 for a 36-hole total of 146. In the opening 18 holes, the junior had 12 pars, four bogeys and two birdies. His second round was a little more up and down, but finished with an even par 72. He opened the second round with a bogey and was 3-over through four holes with a double bogey on the par 4 third. After a bogey on the fifth hole, Widegren had birdies on holes six and nine. A bogey on the 12th hole moved him to 3-over before posting a birdie on the 15th and an eagle on the par 5 17th.
Alfredo Ruiz is one shot behind Widegren and tied for 43rd with a 36-hole total of 147. The junior shot a 3-over 75 despite turning in four birdies. He then moved up 14 spots in the standings with a second round 72. Ruiz was at 1-under par after an eagle on the par 5 ninth hole, but he dropped a shot on the 12th to finish even for the round.
Luis Ruiz had an opening-round, 5-over 77 before rallying with four birdies and an eagle in the second round for a 1-over 73. He moved up 10 spots from the first round to the second and is tied for 57th with a 36-hole total of 150.
Thadd Obecny II had his third career round of par or better with an opening-round 71. He reeled off 16 pars with a bogey and two birdies for his 1-under par round. In the afternoon, he has eight bogeys and 10 pars for a second-round 80. He is tied for 64th overall with a two-round total of 151.
