CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team scored three runs in the seventh inning, however, the Chanticleers (15-15) could not complete the comeback as they dropped a 6-3 decision to North Carolina Wednesday afternoon.
Prior to the game, senior Morgan Noad was honored for her astonishing feat of becoming Coastal Carolina's all-time home run leader. On March 15, Noad hit her 62nd career home run to surpass former teammate Kory Hayden. Noad now has 63 career round-trippers and is just four shy of the league's all-time mark of 67. She ranks sixth in the nation with 11 home runs this season and her 63 career home runs ranks fourth among active NCAA players.
The Tar Heels took an early 4-0 in the top of the first. UNC's Kristen Brown hit an RBI double to send home Destiny DeBerry and put runners on second and third. A pair of ground outs plated two more Tar Heel runners for a 3-0 lead. Aquilla Mateen capped the scoring with an RBI single.
The teams traded zeroes until the top of the fifth when UNC added another run. Berlynne Delamora hit a leadoff double and took third on a CCU error. Tracy Chandless came through with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-0.
North Carolina pushed its advantage to 6-0 in the sixth. With two outs and bases loaded, Kendra Lynch hit an RBI single to center to bring home Kristen Brown.
Coastal attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Annie Robinson, Angela Buccilli and Devon Steiner each singled to load the bases with one out. Adriana Toro reached on a fielder's choice, plating pinch runner Timi Tooley. After Alexis Alvino singled up the middle to load the bases once again, Bri Chiusano RBI singled to send Steiner and Toro home to make the score 6-3. However, UNC's Lynch (13-11) induced a ground out to end both the rally and game.
Kelsey Dominik (10-8) suffered the loss. She allowed nine hits and six runs over 6.0 innings with two strikeouts. Ashley Guillette pitched the final innings and struck out two while allowing one hit.
Coastal will be back in action with a three-game series this weekend as they return to Big South play on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader versus Liberty. Frist pitch set for 4:00 p.m.
