Coastal Wins Road Test at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team gained some breathing room over Big South rival Charleston Southern in the conference standings with a 6-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex.
The two sides entered the match with identical 4-1 league records, and Wednesday's win puts the Chanticleers (15-4, 5-1) a game in front of the Bucs (9-4, 4-2) with just two weeks remaining before the conference tournament. Coastal currently holds third place in the league table.
Coastal won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, and rattled off four straight singles wins to seal the match.
CCU's No. 2 pairing of Cari Berry and Natalie Wall opened doubles with a 6-0 blanking of Gabriela Srodowski and Kimberly Koerner, and Libby Scott and Sara Bondar finished the point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 against Nicolin Luecke and Brianna Thompson.
Berry claimed the first singles point in straight sets over Srodowski at No. 4. Scott followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Luecke at No. 1. The match-clinching point came on the fifth singles court, where Marie Babayan handed a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Koerner.
Romane Delay added a straight-sets victory over Thompson and No. 3, and Bondar won the lone three-set match of day at No. 6.
Sophie Cloessner provided the Bucs' lone singles point at No. 2, where she topped Wall 6-4, 6-4.
"Our team continues to show improvement every match, and is playing some really tough tennis right now," said head coach Catherine Hewitt following the match. "We are all very proud of the effort we gave today."
Coastal returns home for its next match, a 10 a.m. meeting with Presbyterian on Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
