HONOLULU, HI. - The Coastal Carolina softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon, 8-7 to Stanford and 8-4 at Hawaii.
Coastal (8-12) will continue play Tuesday, March 8, at Hawaii as it closes out the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. HST (11:00 p.m. EST).
On the day, Coastal combined for six home runs with Morgan Noad accounting for three and Kelsey Dominik two. The duo also each drove in four in the doubleheader. Noad now has eight round-trippers for the season.
The Chanticleers took an early led thanks to a two-run homerun from Noad in the top of the first. Dominik then walked and Alexis Alvino reached with a base hit. The pair would come around to score as Stanford's defense made two fielding errors to allow CCU to take a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, Stanford tied it up at four a piece. Whitney Burkes and Kayla Bonstrom hit back-to-back doubles, allowing Burkes to score. Then, a three-run homerun from Victoria Molina tied the game at 4-4.
In the third inning, Taty Forbes singled up the middle then stole second. Two batters later, Dominik hit a homerun to center field to regain the lead, 6-4. However, in the home half, Stanford's Lauren Frost hit a three-run homer to give the Cardinal a 7-6 lead through three complete.
The Chants tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the fourth as Noad hit a bomb over the center field fence.
The teams traded zeroes until the bottom of the seventh. Burkes came through with a two-out single. Bonstrom then hit a walk off double to give Stanford the 8-7 victory.
Dominik (4-7) suffered the setback after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing seven hits.
In game two of the day, Hawaii took an early lead over Coastal as Rachel Turner singled to left field, plating Rachel Lack for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
The Rainbow Warriors improved their lead, 3-0, when Nicole Lopez doubled to center field, driving in Sarah Muzik. Ulu Matagiese later hit a sac fly to bring home Lopez.
In the fourth, Noad continued her big day as she hit her third homerun of the doubleheader - and eighth of the season - to close the gap to 3-1. Then, Dominik blasted one over the left field fence for her second homerun of the day to trim the CCU deficit to one, 3-2.
However, Hawaii knocked a pair of homeruns in the bottom of the fifth, a solo homer from Keiki Carlos and a two-run shot from Lack, to take a 6-2 lead.
Leading off for Coastal in the sixth, Forbes singled to left field. Noad then singled to right moving Forbes to second. Dominik followed with a base hit to left field to plate Forbes, making the score 6-3.
Hawaii bounced back to score twice in the bottom of the sixth. Muzik had a leadoff double and Lopez singled to set up a two-run RBI single up the middle by Lack, giving Hawaii an 8-3 lead.
Coastal's Annie Robinson hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to provide the 8-4 final score.
CCU starting pitcher Taylor Rahach (0-2) suffered the loss. She allowed five hits and three runs in 3.1 innings.
