GREENVILLE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina opened the Bill Carson Invitational on Friday afternoon with impressive performances from its field athletes, including a first-place finish from Devontaye Edwards (49.98m, 164-00) in the men's discus.

For the second consecutive weekend, Edwards stole the show with a dominating performance. The redshirt freshman set a new Coastal school record in the men's discus last weekend at the UNF Spring Break Invitational, and the mark he set Friday ranks No. 4 for CCU this season.

Moreover, Coastal had three top 10 finishers in the men's javelin, as Robert Castellani (59.55m, 195-04) placed third and Nick Seabright (56.41m, 185-01) finished fourth and set a new personal-best mark. Cody Wilde took sixth with a throw of 53.19m (174-06).

Earlier in the day, Cari Pallini finished ninth in the women's discus with a throw of 41.15m (135-00), her second-best mark of the season. In other action, Samantha Layko placed sixth in the women's hammer, posting a mark of 50.68m (166-03).

Additionally, Coastal had two top 10 finishers in the men's hammer, with Ryan Minor (57.86m, 189-10) placing fourth and Zach Bolton scoring sixth-place with a throw of 49.03m (160-10). The afternoon wrapped up with Coastal's Chloe White finishing second in the women's javelin with a mark of 41.36m (135-08).

After the first day of action, Coastal's men's team leads with 32 points. Troy is in second with 18 points, followed by North Carolina St. (17), Citadel (14), East Carolina (14), Charlotte (13) and High Point (9).

On the women's side, the Chants are in fourth place with 11 points. East Carolina leads with 35 points, while Troy (27) and High Point (20) are close behind. Charlotte is in fifth-place with 10 points, and Citadel (7) is tied with North Carolina St. for sixth-place.

The Chants are set to compete tomorrow in Day Two of the Bill Carson Invitational, with events slated to begin at 11 a.m. After that, Coastal travels to High Point, N.C., on April 15 for the Big South Challenge Cup.
