Aug. 19, 2016 CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina football team closed its three weeks of preseason camp with an 80-play scrimmage Friday morning at Brooks Stadium. Coastal will begin its normal "game-week" schedule next week as classes at The University begin Monday. The Chanticleers open the 2016 season on Sept. 3 at Lamar.
"Without watching the film, I was relatively pleased with today's scrimmage," said fifth-year head coach Joe Moglia. "Our quarterbacks are young and inexperienced, so it was good to have them in these live situations. I think our offense was effective at times and moved the ball. I really like what I saw from our defense overall, but we need to clean up a few things, namely penalties. I also think our special teams units looked sharp."
The scrimmage began with five series of downs with the offense having the ball on the defense's five yards line.
- On the first play, Josh Stilley hit Osharmar Abercrombie in the flat for a touchdown.
- Second play was a muffed snap, which the defense recovered.
- H-back Miguel Valdes had two rushes, one for four yards and one for a touchdown.
- Masamitsu Ishibashi made a 32-yard field goal.
- Kenneth Daniels scored a five-yard rushing touchdown.
After that period, the scrimmage turned into a "four-quarter" scrimmage with the offense taking the ball on its own 30 or 40 and having to drive most of the length of the field. While there was no running clock, the teams ran two sets of drives to constitute a quarter.
Coastal's offense was able to score in each quarter, including a field goal and three touchdowns.
The defense forced a three-and-out on the first drive, but the offense bounced back to score on the second drive. Malcolm Williams and Antawn Chandler had back-to-back, 12-yard receptions. The drive nearly stalled with the offense facing fourth and long. However, the defense committed a pass interference to keep the drive alive. The defense stiffened once again to force a field goal with Ryan Granger splitting the uprights from 31 yards out.
The second quarter also started with Tyler Keane throwing an interception to DeAvin Rencher. Once again, the offense responded with points. Austin Bradley found Trey Gattison down the left sideline for a 40-yard gain. After consecutive negative plays, Bradley regrouped to find Chandler in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown.
The third and fourth quarters were the opposite of the first two as the offense scored touchdowns on each of its first drives of the period before the defense rallied.
In the third quarter, Daniels sparked the offense with an 18-yard run and Avery McCall later found Williams for a 31-yard gain to the four yard line. Ra'Quan Bennett followed with a four-yard burst up the middle for a touchdown.
In the final quarter, Keane rolled to his right and connected with Jay King II in the back corner of the end zone for a seven-yard score.
For the defense in the second half, Darrell Malone Jr. and Preston Carey each recorded interceptions.
