Ruiz, who had never finished a 54-hole event under par, tied his career best with back-to-back rounds of 69 over the final 36 holes to record his 8-under par 208. The 208 ties for the 13th-best, 54-hole score in CCU history and the best round by a Chanticleer since Andrew Dorn carded an 11-under par 205 in March of 2015. Ruiz's previous best, 54-hole score was 211 and his previous best score in relation to par was 1-over on three occasions. Ruiz was under par in all three rounds (70-69-69) for the first time in his career. In fact, in his first 69 career rounds prior to this event, Ruiz had just one round in the 60's and just 10 rounds total or par or better. The runner-up finish marked his second career top five finish as he placed fourth at last fall's USC --Camden intercollegiate.
Ruiz, who finished two rounds of golf Monday with a triple bogey, opened play Tuesday with a par on the par-3 fifth, one of his 13 pars in the final round. He posted birdies on holes 7 and 8 before making the turn at 2-under through five holes. He carded another birdie on the par-5 11th hole, but dropped a s shot on the par-3 14th hole. However, the senior bounced back with a birdie on 15 before closing his round with seven straight pars. For the 54 holes, Ruiz carded 17 birdies, the second-best total in the field,
Thadd Obecny II shot a final-round 77 and tied for 44th with a 54-hole score of 220 (72-71-77). Luis Ruiz climbed 16 spots thanks to a final round 73. The sophomore had four birdies, three bogeys and a double in the final round as he tied for 56th with a three-round score of 224 (72-79-73).
Olle Widegren, who had a team-best 35 pars over the three rounds, tied for 69th with a score of 227 (73-75-79). Daniel Overas rounded out CCU's quintet by scoring 238 (79-73-86) and placing 87th.
Coastal Carolina will return to action Oct. 8-9 at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, played at UNC's Finley Golf Club.
