ELON, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team had four singles players and a doubles pair advance to championship matches over the weekend at the Elon Fall Invitational. None of the championship matches were played, however, as the final day of the tournament on Sunday was rained out.
The Chants finished the weekend 13-3 in singles and 4-2 in doubles.
"We were excited for the championship round but unfortunately the weather wouldn't allow us to play," said head coach Chris Powers. "Nevertheless, it was a very solid weekend for the program and it feels like we're heading in the right direction."
Luiz Faria, Zak Talic, Sebastian Schneider and Jose Ortega all advanced to the championship match of their respective singles flights.
Faria started with a straight-sets win against Charlotte on Friday before taking a pair against Elon and Winthrop on Saturday to advance to the final.
Talic and Schneider were playing in the same flight and would have faced each other in the championship on Sunday. Talic notched wins over players from USC Upstate, Old Dominion and James Madison, while Schneider won all three of his matches in straight sets against Charlotte, Winthrop and Upstate.
Ortega, playing in the final singles flight, also recorded a trio of straight-sets wins. The freshman took down Liberty, Winthrop and Elon to earn a spot in the final.
Ortega was also slated to play in a doubles final as he and partner Francesco Migliano advanced to their respective championship match. After a first-round bye, the two decisively beat Liberty, 8-0, and won a close 8-7 (3) match against UNC Asheville.
The Chants' fall schedule continues next weekend at the South Carolina Intercollegiate Championships in Belton, S.C.. Action begins Friday and continues through to Sunday.
