Coastal Falls to Furman in Season Opener

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to Furman in its 2017 season opener Saturday morning at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
"The score might not have gone our way but I'm very encouraged with the direction we are heading," said Chanticleer coach Catherine Hewitt. "Furman has a very talented team, but it was great to see us get the doubles point."
The Chanticleers claimed the doubles point once the match had already been decided, as the teams opted to open with singles play.
Furman swept all six singles courts in straight sets to take a 6-0 match lead.
Furman also struck first in doubles, as Ansley Speaks and Aryn Green topped Sara Bondar and Rylie Cox, 6-1, on the first court. Romane Delay and Natalie Wall evened the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2, and the Chants' third pairing of Alexa Tiefel and Marie Babayan won the point for Coastal after downing Hannah Ferrett and Gabby Rodriguez in a tiebreaker.
Coastal remains at home for its next three matches, starting with an 11 a.m. contest against USC Upstate on Jan. 28.
