CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team began its 2017 spring season Friday afternoon with a 5-2 win over visiting USC Upstate at the Stevens Tennis Complex.

The Chanticleers (1-0) won the opening doubles point, and took three of the first four singles decisions over Upstate (0-2) to clinch the match.

"We opened with three freshmen in the lineup, so I was unsure how things would go today," said Chanticleer coach Chris Powers. "But I was very proud of our performance. Our group competed well and with a lot of heart. It's still early, but today was a promising start for our program."

Francesco Migliano and Jose Ortega paired to deliver the first doubles win on the third court, 6-4. Sebastian Schneider and Zak Talic followed with a win on the first court by the same margin to clinch the opening point.

Fernando Bernardes and Ignacio Garrido closed doubles by edging Luiz Faria and Francesco Cori Gamero, 7-5, on No. 2.

Francisco Neto evened the match after taking the first singles point over Gamero at No. 5.

The Chants then quickly put the match out of reach as Talic (No. 3), Faria (No. 2) and Ortega (No. 6) won consecutive straight-sets matches to secure the win.

Upstate claimed its second point on the first singles court where Felix Ewers topped Schneider in straight sets, and Migliano closed the match with the lone three-set win of the day at No. 4.

Coastal returns to its home courts on Sunday to host Radford for an 11 a.m. match.
