BOONE, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team rallied from two sets down to defeat Appalachian State in five (23-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-13) Saturday afternoon at the Mountaineers' Holmes Center.
Sunday's win completes the weekend sweep of App State (7-15, 2-6 SBC), as Coastal (10-7, 7-1) previously defeated the Mountaineers in four sets on Friday night.
It is the first match this season that has seen the Chanticleers rally from a two-set deficit to come back for a victory.
Leah Hardeman led four Chanticleers that finished with double-digit kills. The senior outside hitter landed 25 swings for her fifth 20-plus kill performance of the season, and added 14 digs for her 13th double-double.
Following Hardeman were Kinga Windisch with 16 kills, Dora Lulic with 14 kills and Kyla Manning with 11 kills. All three Chants posted hitting percentages over .300, including a .522 pace for Lulic, who also led all players at the net with five blocks.
Sara Boothe notched her second consecutive double-double, recording a season-high in assists with 51 and adding 14 digs.
Sydney Alvis had 28 of Coastal's 76 total digs, and the Chants tallied 12 team blocks to help limit App's hitting percentage to .284.
The Chants, meanwhile, hit .331 for the match, finishing each set with a .314 percentage or higher.
The opening set featured 16 ties and six lead changes, but a series of five straight points from App that broke a 17-17 tie proved to be the difference-maker in the game. The back-and-forth action did not continue into the second set, as the score was tied just once and App never trailed in the game.
The Chants overcame 10 ties and five lead changes in the third set to start the comeback. App nearly pulled off a sweep, using an 8-2 run to take a 24-21 lead and force match point. The Chants then received kills from Windisch, Lulic and Manning to stave off defeat. Manning came up large to finish of the set, putting down three consecutive kills to help the Chants win the game in extras.
The rest of the match featured just one App State lead, which came in the final set when the Mountaineers won the first three points. Hardeman and Windisch combined for 10 kills in the fourth set, while Manning paced the Chants with four in the fifth. The Chants also saved their best hitting for last, closing the match with a .400 percentage.
Coastal led by as many as seven points in the fourth set, and closed the match on a 6-2 run in the final game.
Coastal remains on the road for its next two matches, traveling to ULM on Friday before taking on Louisiana on Saturday.
