
Wake Forest leads General Hackler Championship, Coastal 12th

MYRTLE BEACH - Wake Forest shot rounds of 279 and 282 for a 15-under par to lead the 15-team General Hackler Championship, presented by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, by 10 strokes through 36 holes, played at the par-72, 7,233-yard The Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
The final 18 holes of the 16th annual event are scheduled for Sunday. However, inclement weather is in the forecast and a decision will be made Sunday morning if conditions will permit play.
Host Coastal Carolina is 12th (301-298=599) and leads #3 Virginia and #46 North Carolina State. Overall, this year's 15-team field features nine schools are currently among the nation's top 50 including #3 Virginia, #9 LSU, #12 Kent State, #15 Wake Forest, #35 North Florida, #38 Kentucky, #39 South Carolina, #45 NC State and #47 Iowa State.
Kent State and LSU were only other teams to shoot under par Saturday as the Golden Flashes are at 5=under par (571) and the Tigers are at 3-under (573). South Carolina (584) and Virginia Tech (586) round out the top five.
Wake Forest's Will Zalatoris leads the individuals, posting rounds of 68-67 for a 9-under 135 to tie a 36-hole Hackler Championship record. Ian Holt (Kent State) is one stroke back, shooting a pair of 68's for his 136. Paul McBride (Wake Forest) is third at 7-under (67-70-137). Zalatoris, who only had three bogeys, recorded 12 birdies over 36 holes, while McBride had 11 and Holt 10.
Sophomore Luis Ruiz led Coastal through two rounds, tying for 19th and shooting a 2-over par 146. He opened with a 73, carding four bogeys and three birdies. He also shot 73 in round two, with three bogeys and two birdies, but his second-round score moved Ruiz up eight spots in the standings.
States Fort, playing as an individual, is tied for 40th with a 36-hole score of 148. The freshman, who had five birdies on the day, opened with a 75 and moved up seven spots thanks to his 73 in round two.
Thadd Obecny II was the third Chant to shoot a 73 in round two to climb the individual standings. He shot a 76 in the morning session before carding a 1-over 73 in the afternoon for a two-round total of 149. Obecny jumped 12 spots after round two and is tied for 45th.
Ryan Carpenter turned in a pair of 75's and is tied for 51st with his total of 150. Alfredo Ruiz is tied for 67th (77-77=154) and Daniel Overas is tied for 82nd (80-84-164). Olle Widegren and Corey Herman, playing as individuals, are 54th-tied (75-76=153) and 78th (80-79=159), respectively.
