Greenville, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina lacrosse team opened ASUN play with a 15-8 victory over Furman in Greenville, Sunday afternoon.
The Chants improved to 4-4 and 1-0, while the Paladins dropped to 4-4 and 0-1 in ASUN play.
Courtney Genovese (6 points, 3 goals and 3 assists) scored the first goal at the 22:49 mark on an assist by Madeline Bromley (5 points, 4 goals and 1 assist). Bromley then scored twice in 2:49 on assists by Genovese for the 3-0 lead.
Furman answered at the 16:37 mark to make it 3-1, before CCU would score twice more at the 14:37 (Genovese) and 11:41(Hannah Krin) to make it 5-1 in favor of the Chants. The Paladins scored 37 seconds later for their final goal of the first half to trail 5-2.
Coastal closed out the half with Bromley finding the back of the net, on a free position, sandwiched by two Keri White goals the later coming with 58 seconds left in the half for 8-2 margin.
Furman found the back of the net twice to open the second half scoring to cut the Chanticleer lead in half 8-4.
White pushed the lead back to five with 26:20 left on the clock on an assist by Maggie Carr (2 assists on the day). The Paladins scored back to back at 26:08 and 18:57 to trail 9-6.
Coastal pulled away with five goals for 14-6 lead, Sophie Crowther (2), Krin, Bromley and Ali Davis all scoring.
Furman cut the lead in half at the 4:01 mark on a free position shot, 14-7. Genovese scored the final Chanticleer goal with 3:05 left, and the Paladins closed the scoring with 1:40 left for the final tally of 15-8.
The Coastal Carolina will next travel to Central Michigan for a game Friday, March 31 at 5:00 ET, and will then travel to Detroit Mercy for a match on Sunday, April 2 at noon.
