CONWAY – Coastal Carolina opened Sun Belt play with a home game against Appalachian State with the Mountaineers leaving Conway with a 2-1 victory over the Chants.
Today's game was a physical affair with 24 total fouls and 3 yellow cards in the game. Coastal controlled most of the game out shooting the visitors 16-8 and had four shots on goal compared to ASU's two.
The second half started off with both teams alternating scoring chances on both sides.
Yazeed Matthews began the scoring in the 71
st minute off of a corner kick by
Morten Timm.
Appalachian State answered quickly by converting a close goal by Austin Hill deflecting off of CCU keeper Chris Datallo. App State took the lead on a rebound from a free kick in the 78
th minute by Alex Hernandez.
Both of the Appalachian State goals were scored by non-starters. Coastal drops to 0-1 in Sun Belt play as App State moves to 1-0-1. CCU will take on national power Clemson on the road Tuesday night.
