Chants Conclude Fall Slate With Lowest Team Round of Season

Coastal Carolina’s Zack Taylor finished fifth overall, his second top-five finish of the fall season

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf team posted its lowest 18-hole team round of the 2018 fall season on Sunday, as the Chants recorded four scores under par to card a round of 280, 8-under par, over the final round of play at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by ETSU in Jonesborough, Tenn.

With their final round of 280, the Chants (286-281-280) finished the three-day event in sixth-place overall with a 54-hole team score of 847, 17-under par. As a team, CCU was third in the tournament field in both par-4 scoring average (3.97, -4) and pars (174).

"Not our best effort this week, but we were able to pick up some good head-to-head wins this fall," stated head coach Jim Garren. "This place is really scoreable and we just came out slow. I've got to do a better job personally of having them ready because this is the type of event we should be contending for the title."

For the second-straight day, junior Zack Taylor led the Chants, this time shooting a round of 69, 3-under par, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 No. 8 and five birdies. His round of 69 was his second-straight round in the 60s, shooting a season-low round of 66 on Saturday, and gave him a 54-hole score of 205, 11-under par, to place him in fifth-place overall. The top-five finish is the second of Taylor's young career at CCU.

Taylor posted a team-best par-4 scoring average of 3.80, -6, which was tied for third overall among all the players in the tournament field. He also totaled a team-high 16 birdies, 30 pars and an eagle over his three rounds of play.

Closing out his final fall event on a high note was senior Morgan Deneen who posted a season-low round of 70, 2-under par, on Sunday to finish in a tie for 32nd overall. The 2018 Sun Belt Champion turned in rounds of 73, 72 and 70 over the weekend to finish with a 54-hole score of 215, 1-under par. Deneen posted a par-5 scoring average of 4.67, -4, and carded 15 birdies over his 54 holes of play.

Also shooting a final round of 70, 2-under par, was senior Wes Artac. Like Taylor, Artac got better as the weekend went along, turning in rounds of 74, 72 and 70 to finish in a tie for 36th-place overall with his 54-hole score of 216, even par. Artac totaled 31 pars and 12 birdies over his three rounds in Tennessee.

CCU's fourth round under par came from States Fort, as the junior posted his second round of 71, 1-under par, for the tournament. With his rounds of 71, 75 and 71, Fort ended the three-day event in a tie for 42nd-place overall with his 54-hole score of 217, +1. He led the entire tournament field with 45 pars on the weekend.

Rounding out the scoring on Sunday for the Chants was Luis Ruiz with his round of 76, +4. The senior, who carded rounds of 73 and 70 over the first two days of play, finished the tournament with a 54-hole score of 219, +3, and in a tie for 49th overall. Ruiz recorded 40 pars over his three rounds of play.

Senior Daniel Overas turned in a final round of 74, +2, as an individual to give him a 54-hole score of 226, +10, and place him in a tie for 71st overall. Overas turned in rounds of 74, 78 and 74, which included 30 pars, eight birdies and a par-5 scoring average of 4.83, -2.

ETSU (832, -32) won the team championship by just one shot over Louisville (833, -31), while Tennessee (835, -29), Kent State (839, -25) and Virginia Tech (845, -19) rounded out the top five on the team leaderboard.

"We had more of a group effort today, which was nice to see. Wes had a nice run at the end, it was a good day for Morgan and we counted four rounds under par which is nice," continued Garren. "As a whole, I think this fall went really well. We beat some really good teams over the fall and played a very challenging schedule. We've still got a long way to go and need to get a lot better, but it was a nice fall season."

The men's golf team will take the winter off from competition and will tee-off its 2019 spring schedule at the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Club in Gainesville, Fla. on Feb. 16-17.
