Men’s Golf Set to Open 2019 Spring Slate at Gator Invite

Coastal Carolina men's golf starts its spring season this weekend in Florida
Conway, S.C. – The 2018 Sun Belt Men's Golf Champions will begin its title defense this spring at the Florida Gators Invitational this weekend, Feb. 16-17, in Gainesville, Fla.
The two-day, 54-hole event will take place at the par 70, 6,701-yards Mark Bostick Golf Course, which has served as the Florida Gators home course since the 1960's and has hosted the Gator Invitational since 1978.
Rounds one and two will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16, with the first round beginning with an 8 a.m. ET shotgun start. The third and final round is set for Sunday, Feb. 17, at 8 a.m. ET.
"We are excited to finally get going this spring. It's been a long time since we competed as a team and we are ready to get back in the mix and compete," commented head coach Jim Garren. "The weather has been great here over the break, so we've definitely got in some good work in preparation for this spring season. This is a big week for us just like every week. This tournament has a strong field and is a good golf course, which is what we like to be a part of."
The tournament field includes seven top 50 ranked teams in No. 5/3 Vanderbilt, No. 21/19 North Florida, No. 30/29 Liberty, No. 39/33 Florida, No. 25/30 USF, No. 41 Georgia Southern and No. 42/38 West Virginia, as well as Jacksonville, Michigan, Mississippi State, Missouri, Princeton, Southern Illinois, UCF and Coastal Carolina (Golfweek/Golfstat rankings).
The Chanticleers will send out the lineup of – No. 1 Zack Taylor, No. 2 Wes Artac, No. 3 Morgan Deneen, No. 4 States Fort and No. 5 Daniel Overas for the spring opener.
Taylor burst on the scene this past fall, leading the Chants with a stroke average of 72.00 over five events, including posting a low round of 66 twice. He will look to continue his strong play this spring and add to his two top-five finishes thus far this year.
Like Taylor, Artac had a solid fall season, as the Texas Tech transfer posted a 73.33 stroke average over 15 rounds of play and totaled five rounds of par or better highlighted by a fall season-low 67 on the final round of play at the Maridoe Intercollegiate in October.
The experienced lineup continues with Deneen, Fort and Overas, all upperclassmen that have played a lot of golf for the Chants the last two seasons.
Deneen closed out the fall season with a 54-hole score of 215, -1 under par, at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate and will look to build on that momentum heading into the spring season beginning this weekend.
Forts played in all five events for the Chants this past fall and has played in a total of 21 tournaments over the last two-plus seasons for Coastal, while Overas will look to close out his final season at Coastal Carolina with a strong spring season in 2019.
Both have the potential to be big-time scorers for the Chants this weekend.
