Coastal Carolina baseball played its first fall scrimmage on Saturday at Clemson
Clemson, S.C. – Coastal Carolina baseball played its first fall scrimmage of the season on Saturday afternoon at Clemson, as the two teams played in a predetermined manipulated 11-man lineup and 14-inning exhibition game at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C.
"This was our first fall scrimmage game against another college in many years. Clemson is always a tremendous challenge and that's why I wanted to play them in Clemson," stated head coach Gary Gilmore. "I saw our kids react in many positive ways and also saw areas we need to improve."
Offensively, catcher Kyle Skeels blasted a home run in the scrimmage, while newcomers Nick Lucky, Scott McKeon and Dallas Callahan all recorded a single. Outfielders Cameron Pearcey and Jared Johnson each had a double in the fall contest as well for Coastal.
On the mound, Coach Gilmore's squad used 13 different pitchers on the day which combined to strike out 18 hitters over the 16-inning scrimmage. No pitcher threw more than 2.0 innings for the contest.
"We play UNCW next Sunday and I expect vast improvement in several areas by then. We have great kids and they are working extremely hard," Gilmore continued. "My staff has worked tirelessly to develop these young men into a team that can contend to play in Omaha at the end of 2019."
The Chants will host UNC Wilmington in their second and final allowable fall scrimmage on Sunday, Nov. 4, at noon at Springs Brooks Stadium.
"We still have many challenges ahead but today was a positive performance and one to build off of," concluded Gilmore.
Coastal will conclude its fall practice with the Chant World Series on Nov. 8, 9 and 11 at Springs Brooks Stadium.
