Fort Tied For First; Chants in Third After 18 Holes at Maridoe

Coastal Carolina’s States Fort is tied for the 18-hole individual lead at the Maridoe Intercollegiate
Carrollton, Texas – Carding a season-low 18-hole score of 68, 2-under par, on Saturday, Coastal Carolina junior golfer States Fort sits in a tie atop of the individual leaderboard, while the men's golf team is in third-place overall after the opening round of play at the inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas in Carrollton, Texas.
On a very challenging course, which is playing par-70 for 7,300 yards, the Chants posted a first round team score of 290, +10, to end the day in third-place overall on the team leaderboard. CCU is just four strokes off the lead and three strokes out of second-place.
As a team, CCU is tied for third in the tournament field with 56 pars and tied for fourth with 12 birdies overall.
"Today was a really good day. This place is so tough. Every single hole is demanding. There is literally no let up," stated head coach Jim Garren. "The guys fought hard all day and we had a nice showing. We have a big day coming up tomorrow."
Matching CCU's lowest 18-hole score of the fall season, Fort posted a first round 68, 2-under par, to pace the Chants on Saturday and finish the day in a three-way tie for first-place. The junior leads the tournament field with a par-4 scoring average of 3.83, -2, and is tied for second in the field with 14 pars. He also added three birdies in his lowest round of the fall season. It is Fort's fifth round in the 60's as a Chant.
"A great round for States. That's the best round I've ever seen from him given the test here," continued Garren. "He made it simple and boring. That's a recipe for success on hard golf courses like this one."
Also in the top 20 after the first 18 holes of play are Luis Ruiz (t-15th) and Wes Artac (t-20th). Ruiz posted two birdies and 12 pars en route to shooting a first round 73, +3. Artac, who is one shot behind Ruiz with a first round 74, +4, totaled 10 pars and three birdies on Saturday.
Rounding out the lineup for CCU on day one of the Maridoe was Zack Taylor and Morgan Deneen. Taylor ended day one in a tie for 31st-place overall with a first round score of 75, +5, while Deneen carded an opening round 78, +8, to place in a tie for 52nd heading into Sunday's second round of play. Taylor turned in three birdies and 10 pars in a very up and down round, while Deneen also had 10 pars over his first 18 holes of play.
Host North Texas leads the event with a team score of 286, +6, while SMU is one stroke behind the Mean Green in second at 287, +7. North Florida (291, +11), Arkansas State (292, +12) and Texas A&M (293, +13) are all close behind Coastal and round out the top six spots.
The second round of play will take place tomorrow, while the third and final round of play is set for Monday.
