Coastal Carolina men’s golf is fourth overall after two rounds of play at the Maridoe Intercollegiate

Carrollton, Texas – On what was a very windy day in Carrollton, Texas, the Chanticleers men's golf team carded a team score of 299, +19, on Sunday to remain in fourth-place overall with a two-round combined score of 589, +29, heading into the final round of play on Monday at the inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas at the Maridoe Golf Club.

"The guys fought hard all day today. The wind blew hard all day and this course is super tough without wind. We had a great effort overall," head coach Jim Garren stated. "It looks like we are going to be 14 shots back of the lead and out here that's certainly doable in terms of trying to catch SMU. We need all five guys in the game tomorrow to make that happen."

Following a first round of 68, 2-under par, yesterday, and entering today's second round in a three-way tie for first-place overall, junior States Fort shot a second round 76, +6, but remains in the top five at fourth-place overall at 144, +4. Fort was again consistent on Sunday, carding two birdies and 10 pars, but was effected by a triple bogey on the par-3 No. 14.

"States continues to have a nice weekend. He unfortunately had one slip up today, but battled hard," continued Garren. "Jeremy [Alcorn] has walked every hole with him this week and those two have a good thing going right now."

Posting his second-straight round of 74, +4, on Sunday was senior Wes Artac, who moved up the leaderboard and into a tie for 16th-place overall at 148, +8. The Texas Tech transfer totaled three birdies and eight pars over his second round.

One stroke behind Artac and in a tie for 20th-place overall is Zack Taylor. Taylor knocked one shot off his first round 75, +5, yesterday, to shoot a 74, +4, on Sunday to enter the final round of play tomorrow with a 36-hole score of 149, +9. After an up and down front nine that saw two birdies, four pars, one bogey and two triple bogies, Taylor settled in to shoot 1-under par with eight pars and one birdie on the back nine.

Seniors Luis Ruiz and Morgan Deenen rounded out the Chants' lineup on Sunday. Ruiz struggled to get going all day long and followed his first round 73, +3, with a second round 78, +8, on Sunday to fall into a tie for 29th-place overall with his 36-hole score of 151, +11. Deenen dropped three shots off his Saturday score of 78, +8, by turning in a round of 75, +5, on Sunday. Deenen carded 12 pars, including eight on the front nine, and one birdie over his second set of 18-holes of play to move up the leaderboard and into a tie for 39th-place overall with his 36-hole score of 153, +13.

SMU carded a team-low round of 288, +8, on Sunday to jump host North Texas and take the team lead at 575, +15. The Mean Green are second overall at 585, +25, while Texas A&M is one stroke ahead of CCU and in third-place overall at 588, +28.

The third and final round of play is set for Monday.
