Artac Shoots 67, Chants Finish Fourth at Maridoe Intercollegiate

Coastal Carolina’s Wes Artac carded a final round 67 to post a runner-up finish
Carrollton, Texas – Coastal Carolina senior Wes Artac carded a final round of 67, 3-under par, on Monday to finish in a tie for second-place overall with a 54-hole score of 215, +5, and lead the Chanticleers men's golf team to a fourth-place team finish at the inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas at the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
The Chants as a team turned in rounds of 290, 299 and 297 to finish the three-day, 54-hole event with a team score of 886, +46.
Late in the final round of play on Monday, a three hour delay was called due to lightning with seven or eight groups still on the golf course with two holes remaining. Fortunately, the Chants finished and got into the clubhouse before the delay occurred.
"We got off to about as bad of a start as possible. I don't know if it was the nerves of being in contention or what, but it was a really tough front nine," said head coach Jim Garren. "We played outstanding on the back, a big-time back nine which is the hardest nine holes on the course. We needed every one of those shots. We beat some really good teams this week, some by double digits. Those are big wins for our program."
Artac, who posted rounds of 74, +4, over both of his first two rounds of play, saved his best for last, as the senior recorded a Coastal Carolina-low round 67, 3-under par, on Monday to jump 14 spots and finish in a tie for second-place overall with his 54-hole score of 215, +5. Matching his career-low 18-hole round and giving the Chants their lowest round of the fall season, Artac totaled five birdies, including four on the back nine, and 11 pars over his final round of play.
Artac was in the top five in both par-4 scoring (4.17, +6) and par-5 scoring (4.33, -4) for the event, and led Coastal with 11 birdies which ranked second in the tournament field.
"Zack and Wes payed great today," continued Garren. "Wes' round was great all the way around. We needed him to have a break through week and he performed."
While not making a climb of double digit spots up the individual leaderboard like Artac, Zack Taylor moved up four spots to finish in a tie for 16th-place overall with his 54-hole score of 221, +11. Taylor got better each and every day over the weekend, shooting rounds of 75, 74 and 72 to record his second top-20 finish of the fall season. On his final round, Taylor had just one birdie, but tallied a team-high 14 pars.
Taylor finished the tournament in the top 10 in par-3 scoring (3.00, even) and led the Chants with 36 pars over 54 holes of play.
Placing in a tie at 41st-place overall was junior States Fort, as he turned in rounds of 68, 76 and 84 over the three rounds of play for a 54-hole score of 228, +18, while fellow upperclassman Luis Ruiz posted rounds of 73, 78 and 78 to finish with a three-round combined score of 229, +19, good enough for a 46th-place finish for the weekend.
Fellow senior golfer Morgan Deneen closed out his three days of play with a final 18-hole score of 80, +10, on Monday. Coupled with his first two rounds of 78 and 75, Deneen placed in a tie for 58th-place with a 54-hole score of 233, +23.
Fort (34), Ruiz (31) and Deneen (34) all had over 30 pars for their 54-holes of play, while Deneen led the Chants with a par-3 scoring average of 2.92, 1-under par, for the tournament.
SMU took home first-place team honors with a 54-hole team score of 861, +21. The Mustangs finished ahead of Texas A&M (875, +35) and North Texas (881, +41).
With its fourth-place finish, Coastal finished in front of New Mexico (889, +49), Arkansas State (890, +50), North Florida (894, +54), Tennessee (898, +58), Indiana (903, +63), UTSA (905, +65), Houston (908, +68), Rice (913, +73), UT Arlington (915, +75) and Boise State (930, +90).
CCU will wrap up its 2018 fall slate next weekend, Oct. 12-14, at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by ETSU at the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.
