Five Chants Named Google Cloud Academic All-District

Coastal Carolina’s Clayton, Kelly, Hoffman, Bedosky, and Tyler all earn academic honor
Conway, S.C. – A total of five Coastal Carolina football student-athletes in Jonathan Clayton, Silas Kelly, Brock Hoffman, Steven Bedosky and Ky'Jon Tyler were named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District first team in football, CoSIDA announced on Thursday. All five Chants were named to the NCAA Division I District 4 first team.
The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District football team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.
Clayton, a business management and marketing major, has started and played in all 10 games for the Chanticleers on the defensive line. The sophomore has totaled 31 tackles, 14 of which have been solo stops, and 0-5 tackles for loss on the season. He recorded a season-high seven tackles in the home win over UAB on Sept. 8 and has combined to record 11 stops on the defensive line over each of the last two games for CCU.
Despite missing almost two full games on the year due to an injury, Silas still ranks third on the team overall with 45 tackles. The sophomore linebacker and preseason second-team All-Sun selection led the way for Coastal with eight solo tackles in the season opener at South Carolina on Sept. 1 and also had eight total stops in the win over UAB the following week. He also has posted 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, two pass breakups and recovered a fumble in the road win at Campbell. Silas is a double major in exercise and sports science and management.
Hoffman and Bedosky, both key offensive lineman for the Chants' offense this season, have started and played every game this season up front for CCU. The duo is part of a unit that has cleared the way for an offense that ranks fourth in the Sun Belt and 25th nationally with 221.8 rushing yards per game, as well as sixth in the Sun Belt and both total yards per game with 397.8 and points per game at 27.5 on the year. Hoffman is majoring in information systems, while Bedosky is studying economics.
Tyler, a 2018 Burlsworth Trophy nominee, has played in nine games this season with four starts at wide receiver. The junior digital cultural design major is second on the team with 20 receptions for 324 yards on the year, and has scored three touchdowns this season – two receiving and one rushing. Tyler has also been the leading returner for the Chants' special teams this season, as he has returned four punts for 30 yards and tallied 11 kick returns for 229 yards, all team highs.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. First- and second-team (if applicable) Academic All-America honorees will be announced in early December.
