CONWAY - After taking an early 3-2 lead, the Coastal Carolina softball team dropped to 14-11 on the season Thursday night as they fell to the Texas Longhorns by the score of 5-3, in the respective schools first-ever meeting.

Chanticleer starter Ashley Guillette went to consecutive 3-2 counts to lead-off hitter Janae Jefferson and second batter Ki'Audra Hayter. Jefferson walked on seven pitches and then was able to advance on a wild pitch. Hayter moved Jefferson along to third with a groundout to shortstop, Alexis Alvino, but next batter MK Tedder flied out to left field and brought in the first run of the game in.

Guillette got into trouble again in the top of the second after getting a quick two outs. The Chants got the ground ball they were looking from Longhorn Randel Leahy, as third baseman, Stavi Augur made a clean stab down the line but as she threw to first base, sophomore Kassidy Smith stumbled and allowed the ball to get over her head advancing Leahy to second. Texas took the lead, 2-0 the next batter, Kaitlyn Slack singled to right field as a freshman Courtney Dean came up throwing but Leahy beat the throw.

Down by two runs in the bottom of the second both Smith and freshman Samantha Sack singled to start off the inning and two batters later, junior Natalie David was able to give the Chants the 3-2 lead with a three-run homer to left center.

In the top of the fifth, Texas' top of the lineup got on base with consecutive bunt singles, allowing Paige von Sprecken to give the Longhorns a 5-3 lead with the team's seventh home run of the season. That's all reliever Kristen Clark would need as the right-handed pitcher picked up her first save of the season in three innings of relief.

Ashley Guillette falls to 8-5 on the season as she pitched five innings, allowing five runs but just four earned.

The Chanticleers travel to San Marcos, Texas for their first conference road trip of the year as they play Texas State in a three-game set, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
