PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - States Fort fired a 69 Monday and Coastal Carolina moved up to tie for 14th (304-296-292=892) at the annual John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, played at the par 72, 6,966-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
The Chanticleers posted the eighth-best score in the final round to tie West Virginia for 14th. Auburn, ranked seventh nationally, carded a 13-under par round of 275 to win the 15-team event with a 54-hole score of 852. North Carolina, ranked 24th, finished second (853), followed by Liberty (861), UCF (869), Jacksonville (870), #42 Purdue (872), #25 North Florida, #39 Louisville (876), Washington (876) and #49 Tennessee (880).
"We played well today overall and beat some good teams for today's round," said head coach Jim Garren. "Despite how things may appear these last two events, we got better. The General Hackler Championship and the Hayt Collegiate are played on championship caliber courses. Also, the weather conditions at both events were tough. Then, if you factor in that we played some of the nation's top-ranked programs each event, our finish did not necessarily reflect where we stand as a program. We will be better for playing these type events and against these type of programs. We will take the next two events to gear up and ready ourselves to perform at a high level by the time our conference championship rolls around."
Fort shot a season-best 69 -- his second-best career round -- to lead the Chanticleers Monday. He moved up 25 spots to tie for 41st with a three-round total of 222 (78-75-69). The sophomore was evn par through 11 holes, thanks to two birdies and two bogeys. He then birdied four of his next six before dropping a shot on his final hole to shoot 69. Fort's 13 birdies over 54 holes ranked sixth-best in the field.
"States had a solid round of golf and it was nice to see him finish off a round," Garren said.
For the event, Daniel Overas was Coastal's top scorer. For the second consecutive round, the junior shot even par and moved up nine spots to finish tied for 31st with a score of 220 (76-72-72). On Monday, Overas had two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars to shoot 72. He posted back-to-back rounds of par thanks to ranking fifth in the field with a par 3 scoring average of 2.92.
Thadd Obecny II tied for 49th (75-73-76=224), Luis Ruiz tied for 68th (75-79-75=229), Morgan Deneen, playing as an individual, finished in 74th (78-81-74=233) and Andrew Roy tied for 77th (79-76-79=236). Obecny and Roy each tallied 34 pars, which was the fourth-best total and ranked 16th among the field.
Coastal Carolina will return to action in three weeks (April 9-10) at the Gary Koch Invitational, hosted by Kentucky and Auburn in Gastonia, N.C., at the Gaston Country Club.
