Men's Soccer Picks Up Win at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team had not played another opponent since a 1-0 win over UAB back on Sept. 2. After fleeing Conway to get away from Hurricane Florence the Chants made it back on the pitch against William & Mary and picked up where they left off; a shutout victory.

The Chants got a second half goal from Yazeed Matthews in the 78th minute and added an own goal in the 89th minute to pull out the 2-0 victory over the Tribe.

Matthews had three shots on the night, but after missing his second shot, he was able to rebound up his own miss and pick up the goal on the rebound to give CCU the only goal it would need.

Goalkeeper Chris Dattalo may have had the best match of his career. The senior New York native had a career-high five saves on the night leading CCU to its third consecutive shutout.

The match saw the hosts outshoot CCU 14-12, but CCU had a 4-3 edge in corners, and the Chants continued to attack the goal while being called for six offsides compared to none for W&M.

It was a physical game with each team picking up yellow cards and a total of 30 fouls were called, 22 of those on the Chants. The win pushes Coastal Carolina to 4-1 while the Tribe falls to 2-4.

The Chants are scheduled to host nationally-ranked and undefeated Portland Monday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. While the match is still scheduled, please check goccusports for any changes that may happen for that match.
