Coastal Carolina’s Luis Ruiz placed in the top-15 over the weekend
Albuquerque, N.M. – Behind senior Luis Ruiz's par 72 on Saturday, the Coastal Carolina men's golf team climbed a spot in the team leaderboard over the final day of play to finish ninth overall with a 54-hole team score of 889, +25, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico at the UNM Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Chanticleers turned in a final round team score of 298, +10, on Saturday following rounds of 296 and 295 on Friday. Coastal Carolina finished ahead of half the field in Colorado State (895, +31), Denver (896, +32), UT Arlington (896, +32), New Mexico State (903, +39), Loyola Marymount (906, +42), Texas-El Paso (906, +42), Nebraska (907, +43) and the Air Force (924, +60).
"I am proud of our effort this week. Obviously, we would have liked to have finished higher, but to come all the way across the country and go 8-8 shouldn't be overlooked," commented head coach Jim Garren. "Most of the teams we played this week were familiar with the Tucker and this golf course. This was completely different for us and the guys handled it nicely."
Ruiz, who posted rounds of 74 and 70 on Friday, paced the Chants with a 72, even par, over the final 18 holes of play on Saturday to finish the two-day event with a 54-hole score of 216, even par, and in a tie for 13th-place overall. The senior had one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars for his third round of play. He finished the tournament with a par-3 scoring average of 2.92, -1, which was tied for the third-best average in the tournament field, and with a par-5 scoring average of 4.83, -2. He was also tied for the tournament lead with 41 pars, while also carding seven birdies over his 54 holes on the weekend.
"It was a very solid week for Luis. That's a nice finish against a very strong field," continued coach Garren. "I am really proud of the maturity he showed despite not having his best stuff this weekend."
Behind Ruiz for CCU was first-year Chants' Zack Taylor and Wes Artac. Taylor finished his three rounds of play with a final round of 74, +2, on Saturday, to place in a tie for 43rd-place overall with his 54-hole score of 222, +6. Artac shot his best round of the tournament on Saturday with a 73, +1, to finish in a tie for 46th with a three-round combined score of 223, +7. Taylor led the Chants with a team-high 10 birdies, while Artac posted a par-5 scoring average of 4.67, -4, for the weekend.
Rounding out the CCU lineup was junior States Fort (75-75-79) who finished in a tie for 63rd overall with a 54-hole score of 228, +12, and freshman Brady Hinkle (77-78-81) who carded a three-round combined score of 236, +20, to finish in a tie at 89th-place. Both Fort and Hinkle struggled over the final round of play on Saturday, however, Fort led the Chanticleers with a par-5 scoring average of 4.58, -5, for the tournament.
Playing as an individual, freshman Connor Newton (76-80-80) finished in a tie with fellow Chant newcomer Hinkle with a 54-hole score of 236, +20.
BYU won the team championship with a two-day combined 54-hole team score of 848, 16-under par, placing ahead of No. 23 UNLV (850, -14), Pepperdine (851, -13), No. 17 Arkansas (860, -4) and host New Mexico (863, -1).
"We've got to get better on easy and score-able holes. That's what kept us from having a really nice week," commented Garren. "We will put in the work there and get better."
The Chanticleers will return to the links for competition next weekend, as CCU will compete in the Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas and UTSA at the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas from Oct. 6-8.
