Men's Basketball Set to Host Northern Kentucky

Game Notes (pdf)

Conway – The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team is set to host Northern Kentucky Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the HTC Center.

Fresh off a 36-point victory over Hampden-Sydney, the Chanticleers will look to push their overall record to 2-1 against the Norse from the Horizon League.

This will be the second time these two teams have met on the hardcourt. Last year, CCU traveled to NKU to play in the KEMI Northern Kentucky Basketball Classic.

CCU played the Norse in the final game of the classic and the two teams had a classic as NKU pulled out an 89-83 win in a high-scoring affair. The difference came down to the free throw line where the home team was able to get to the charity strip and attempt 41 free throws. CCU did shoot 26 of their own freebies and made 22 of those, but the difference was too much to make up late in the game.

Both teams enter the matchup with identical 1-1 records as NKU defeated UC Clermont (105-55) in its opening game only to lose to SEC-member Missouri (71-56) last Friday.

The Norse are coming off back-to-back Horizon League Championships and NCAA Championship berths. Unfortunately, they had to play eventual Final Four finalist Texas Tech in the opening round in which they fell 72-57.

The Norse has four starters returning from last year's team while three of the four averaged double-figures last season. Tyler Sharpe is the leader of that bunch with an average of 14.4 points per game last year. Jalen Tate (13.7), Dantez Walton (11.1) and Trevon Faulkner (4.7) are the other returning starters.

Sharpe has continued his scoring pace to start this season averaging over 18 points per game. Faulkner (12.0), Silas Adheke (11.5) and Bryson Langdon (10.0) have also been solid on the offensive end of the court.

CCU has not had any problem shooting the basketball in its first two games, as the Chants shot 48 percent in the opener versus Campbell and 53 from the field against Hampden-Sydney last Friday.

Tyrell Gumbs-Frater, the returning three-point percentage leader in the Sun Belt, has not shown any signs of working his way back into form. He has averaged 22.5 points per game and has hit 10-of-15 three-point attempts this season.

A couple of newcomers in Keishawn Brewton (18.5) and Garrick Green (13.0) have both shown the ability to score some points. Green is almost averaging a double-double as he leads the team in rebounding averaging 9.0 per game.

This game is the third of seven consecutive home games the Chants are playing to open the 2019-20 season.
