Men's Basketball hits the Road for First Time this Season

Game Notes

CONWAY – After playing its first seven games in the friendly confines of the HTC Center, the Coastal Carolina men's basketball team will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Dover, Del., to face the Hornets of Delaware State Saturday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m.

Delaware State and Coastal Carolina have never met on the hardcourt, and it is also the sixth time in CCU's opening eight games the Chanticleers are facing a first-time opponent.

DSU (1-7) is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Chants have faced MEAC opponents 29 times over its' basketball history and have a 19-10 record in those games. The Hornets are not the only MEAC school the Chants will face this season as CCU will host North Carolina Central Dec. 14.

Delaware State is coming off a 90-53 victory over St. Elizabeth in its' last outing and has three players averaging double-digit scoring. John Crosby leads the team with an 18.5 points per game average and is the team-leader in steals with 12.

Ameer Bennett enters the game averaging 11.3 points per game and is also the team's leading rebounder averaging 7.1. The other double-digit scorer is John Stansbury at 10.0 points per game.

The Chants (3-4) are looking to get back on track since the loss of Ebrima Dibba who was injured in the game against Baylor. CCU has struggled since his loss and will be looking for someone to step up and fill the gap.

CCU does have a strong nucleus with four players averaging in double figures and one other on the verge. Keishawn Brewton continues to provide plenty of offensive punch off the bench, leading CCU in scoring at 14.7 points per game.

DeVante' Jones, who missed two games to begin the season with his own injury, has stepped in and is averaging 13.5 points per game and is now the leader in assists with 25. He is shooting 63 percent from the field and over 57 percent on his three-point attempts.

Tyrell Gumbs-Frater has moved into the starting lineup and is averaging a career-best 12.6 points per game. He has always been one of the top three-point performers in the Sun Belt and that is no different early in this season as he has hit 17 three's and is shooting over 51 percent.

Garrick Green has filled two roles for the Chants, as a scorer and rebounder. He is averaging 10.3 points per game and is the team's leading rebounder averaging 6.1 per outing. Senior Tommy Burton has battled in the post for CCU this season and is averaging 9.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while shooting over 48 percent from the field and 73 percent at the free throw line.

While CCU has dropped its last two outings, the Chants continue to shoot the ball well at 46 percent from the field and almost 40 percent from beyond the three-point line, while holding their opponents to 40 percent shooting and 31 percent on their three-point attempts.
