CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team picked up an important Sun Belt Conference win with a 2-0 home victory over the Bison of Howard.
The Chanticleers scored goals in each half in earning the shut out win. It was a win that the Chanticleers dominated in all facets of the game.
CCU had a total of 21 shots during the game with eight of those on goal. By comparison, they held the visitors to one shot for the match. CCU also had 14 corner kicks in the game with Howard only having three.
The Chants came out with a lot of energy and almost scored in the first minute of the game when freshman
Sam Snaith's first shot of the game went just wide of the net, but that did not deter the offensive push of CCU.
Tyrone Mondi was able to pick up a goal in the ninth minute, this one on an assist from Snaith, as both players made their way into the front of the net and Snaith found Mondi between two defenders for the early and easy goal.
The score stood that way at halftime despite the Chants out shooting Howard 11-0 in the opening 45 minutes.
CCU's pace of play did not slow down in the second half as the Chants continued their push against the Bison defenders. Just two minutes into the second half, CCU found the back of the net again. This goal came on a perfectly executed corner kick in which
Morten Timm took the corner and found
Marcelo Lage, who at 6'-5" was able to rise above the defenders for a header that put CCU up by the final 2-0 score.
Alberto Ciroi picked up the win in goal for the Chants. It was the fourth shutout of the season for Ciroi and CCU.
With the win CCU moves to 7-7-2 overall, but more importantly, evens their record at 2-2 in Sun Belt Conference action, only one game behind first place Central Arkansas.
The Chants will end regular season play Saturday, Nov. 9 when they host Georgia Southern. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
