Chants Down Panthers in Straight-Sets on Friday

ATLANTA, GA. - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team improved to 20-5 overall and 10-3 in Sun Belt Conference play with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 28-26) sweep of the Georgia State Panthers on Friday night at the GSU Sports Arena. Sophomore Anett Nemeth led the Chants with her sixth double-double of the season including 21 kills and 10 digs.

In set one, the Chants jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never looked back. CCU built its largest lead of the set by the score of 21-14 off four kills by senior Marria Levanova. Coastal would go onto the 25-20 set one victory with a team hitting percentage of .480 (13-of-25, one error) as the Chants were led by a trio of players with four kills apiece. Alongside Levanova, Nemeth and junior Kyla Manning each had four kills and each hit over .571 for the opening set.

The Chants held the Panthers' attack in check with a hitting percentage of .065 (12-of-31) and forced 10 errors. The Coastal front line was led by Christina Nance as the redshirt sophomore had a set-high three blocks.

Coastal Carolina used another strong start in set two to jump out to a six-point lead at 10-4, which included a 5-0 run that saw four consecutive hitting errors by the Panthers, three from Dzemila Hadzic.

With the score 24-16 later in set two, Georgia State would cut the deficit to four points as the home team got kills from Cierra Sillmon and Julianna Truscott. GSU wasn't able to continue its momentum as Coastal would pick up the win by the score of 25-20. Coastal Carolina would hold Georgia State's attack to a sub .100 hitting percentage (.077) for the second consecutive set.

With the Chanticleers controlling set three by the score of 7-4, the Panthers ran off six consecutive points and 11-of-15 to take their second lead of the match and the first since a 2-1 score in set one. Kills by Truscott, Jordan Shoemaker, Sydney Stroud, and two from Leah Wilcox propelled the home squad to a 15-11 lead.

Coastal's leading hitter, Nemeth would rally her team back from the four-point deficit to win 28-26. The Pecel, Hungary native had 10 kills over her team's final 18 points as she totaled 11 in the final stanza.

CCU freshman setter Brigitta Petrenko had a match-high 35 assists.

Levanova was the only other Chant player to reach double-digit kills as she ended the three-set win with 10.

CCU libero Lina Perugina tied with her counterpart from GSU, Lauren Bandera with a match-high 13 digs.

The Chanticleers held the Panthers to a hitting percentage of .128 for the match, as no Georgia State player reached the nine-kill mark.

With the straight-sets sweep, Coastal Carolina improved to 10-0 in three-set matches in 2019.

The Chanticleers will return to the court on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET as they travel to Statesboro to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles. The Chants picked up a 3-1 victory over the Eagles earlier in the season to start Sun Belt play.
