CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina University men's basketball team will look for its first Sun Belt victory when it faces South Alabama Saturday, Dec. 21 at 4 p.m.

Both teams are coming off losses to open Sun Belt play with CCU losing at Troy (77-59) and South Alabama losing its first game to Appalachian State (71-61) on its home court.

The game is a return to Mobile for head coach
Cliff Ellis who picked up 171 victories as South Alabama's head coach from 1975-84. He led the Jags to three Sun Belt titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances as well as a NIT appearance.

South Alabama (6-5/0-1 Sun Belt) was the preseason pick to win the Sun Belt Conference and Trhae Mitchell was the preseason pick as the Sun Belt Player of the Year.

Andre Fox transferred to USA from High Point and leads the Jags in scoring at 16.8 points per game. All-Sun Belt pick Josh Ajayi averages 16 per game.

Mitchell, while not the team's leading scorer continues to be one of the main players on the court for the Jags. He averages 10 points per game while leading USA in rebounding (7.5), assists (2.6), blocked shots (26) and steals (16).

The Chants will be looking to improve on their performance from Thursday's loss at Troy. CCU had their worse shooting performance of the season in scoring 59 points.

CCU's big three
Keishawn Brewton,
DeVante' Jones and
Tyrell Gumbs-Frater were a combined 19 points below their average against Troy in the 18-point loss.

Brewton leads CCU in scoring averaging 16.1 points per game and Jones is next at 14.8. Gumbs-Frater averages 14.3 and continues to lead the team in three-point shooting at 52 percent.

Tommy Burton has had a solid season and continues to average right at 10 points per game and leads the team on the boards at 6.3 rebounds per outing. The senior has nine blocked shots and is tied for team-high honors in steals with 17.
