Coastal Carolina men’s golf shot a final team round of 285 on Sunday at the Gator Invite

Gainesville, Fla. – Coastal Carolina men's golf wrapped up its spring-opening tournament with a team round of 285, +5, on Sunday to place ninth overall in the Florida Gators Invitational held at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.

With their final round of 285, the Chanticleers finished the weekend in ninth-place overall with a 54-hole team score of 862, +22 (288-289-285).

Coastal, who finished just one stroke behind No. 38 West Virginia (861, +21), placed ahead of Mississippi State (867, +27), Michigan (868, +28), No. 41 Georgia Southern (871, +31), Jacksonville (875, +35), Princeton (883, +43) and Southern Illinois (886, +46).

The Chanticleers finished the tournament fifth overall in par-3 scoring as a team at 3.26, +19, and in birdies with 43.

"It is a frustrating finish overall. We have got to get better on the scoring holes because it has been holding us back all season," head coach Jim Garren stated. "States had a nice round today and Wes battled hard all day long. We need to get back to work and clean up little mistakes and get ready for the General Hackler Championship."

Junior States Fort continued his strong play on Sunday, as he led the Chants with a low-round 69, -1 under par, to move up 16 places on the individual leaderboard. Along with his rounds of 74 and 71 on Saturday, Fort finished the three-round event in a tie for 26th overall with a 54-hole score of 214, +4.

Also making a leap up the leaderboard on the final day of play was senior Wes Artac. The transfer posted a final round 71, +1, on Sunday to go along with his first two rounds of 70 and 75 and place in a tie for 34th overall with his 54-hole score of 216, +6.

Coastal's Zack Taylor followed up his second round 68, -2 under par, yesterday afternoon with a third round of 73, +3, on Sunday. With his rounds of 80, 68 and 73, the junior placed in a tie for 55th overall with his three-round combined score of 221, +11.

Seniors Morgan Deneen and Daniel Overas both finished in a six-way tie for 63rd-place overall with tournament scores of 223, +13. Deneen carded rounds of 68, 79 and 76, while Overas turned in scores of 76, 75 and 72 for the three-round event.

Following back-to-back rounds of 75 on Saturday, freshman Tyler Gray shot a final round 79, +9, on Sunday to finish the tournament in a tie for 78th overall with his 54-hole score of 229, +19.

No. 3 Vanderbilt (839, -1 under par) edged No. 33 Florida (840, even par) by one stroke to win the team title, while No. 29 Liberty (842, +2), No. 19 North Florida (846, +6) and No. 30 South Florida (846, +6) rounded out the top five on the team leaderboard.

The Chants will return to competition on March 11-12 when Coastal will host the General Hackler Championship at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
