Coastal Carolina’s Zack Taylor and Brady Hinkle are both under par after 36 holes of play
Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Coastal Carolina men's golf had three players shoot one round under par on day one of the 2019 General Hackler Championship and finished tied in ninth-place overall with a 36-hole team score of 581, +5 on Monday at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Coastal carded rounds of 288 and 293 to end the day with a two-round combined team score of 581, +5. The Chanticleers are ahead of East Carolina (584, +8), Kent State (586, +10), North Texas (590, +14) and Northern Illinois (595, +19).
"We need a big day tomorrow to move up the board. Today was about the easiest the Dunes will ever play and a lot of teams took advantage of that," stated head coach Jim Garren. "We were steady most of the day but instead of picking up shots coming down the stretch we threw several away. We are looking forward to competing tomorrow."
Junior Zack Taylor paced the Chants with a CCU low-round 69, -3 under par, in round one and then carded a second round 74, +2, to end day one in a tie for 23rd overall with a 36-hole score of 143, -1 under par.
Fellow upperclassman Wes Artac shot a first round 71, -1 under par, and a second round 74, +2, to end Monday with a 36-hole score of 145, +1, good enough for 34th-place overall after one day of play.
Senior Morgan Deneen matched Artac with rounds of 71 and 74 for a 36-hole score of 145, +1, while States Fort bounced back from a first round 77, +5, to shoot a second round 72, even par, and moved up to a tie for 56th overall with a 36-hole score of 149, +5.
Luis Ruiz turned in a first round 80, +8, but rebounded to shoot a 73, +1, second round in the afternoon to finish the day with a 36-hole score of 153, +9. He will enter day two in a tie for 69th-place overall.
Also competing in the home event are Brady Hinkle, Daniel Overas, Connor Newton and Tyler Gray, as the group are playing as individuals.
Hinkle is tied for 23rd overall with a two-round combined score of 143, -1 under par, with his two rounds of 71 and 72, while Overas posted back-to-back rounds of 72, even par, to place in a tie for 28th overall with his day one score of 144, even par.
Newton recorded rounds of 71 and 75 to end the day in a tie for 42nd with a two-round score of 146, +2, while Gray registered rounds of 75 and 78 for his 36-hole score of 153, +9.
No. 18 North Florida leads the team leaderboard with a 36-hole team score of 554, -22 under par, four strokes ahead of both No. 25 Liberty (558, -18) and No. 6 Wake Forest (558, -18).
No. 29 Louisville (562, -14), Kentucky (566, -10) and No. 17 Georgia (571, -5) round out the top six of the 13-team leaderboard.
Day two of play will begin at 7:40 a.m. ET.
