CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team swept South Carolina State Friday afternoon, 4-0, in home action at the Stevens Tennis Complex.
 
Coastal improves its record to 2-1 with the win while SC State remains winless this season at 0-5.
 
The Chants got off on the right foot in doubles, winning on the first and third courts to claim the match's opening point.
 
Daiki Tanabe and Gonzalo Achondo defeated Gerardo Diego Arzalu and Omer Gorun, 6-2. SC State evened the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2, but Coastal's first pairing of Joel Popov and Zak Talic finished the job, 7-5.
 
Coastal then claimed the final three points needed on the first, fourth and fifth courts.
 
Luiz Faria defeated Juan Ramirez at No. 1, 6-2, 6-3, Achondo won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, and Tanabe recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5.
 
The matches on courts two, three and six went unfinished.
 
"We are still trying to put it all together in doubles but the mentality and intensity are there," said Chanticleer coach Chris Powers. "I was really proud of our approach in singles. We clinched the match fairly quickly, but we also fought back in both unfinished matches where we lost the first set. I am hoping it is a good sign of the type of team we are becoming."
 
The Chanticleer men have a quick turnaround before their next match as they travel to Presbyterian on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tilt.
