Rock Hill, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team fell to in-state rival Winthrop 11-7, Wednesday afternoon, in Rock Hill, S.C. The loss dropped the Chants record to 2-2 on the season while the Eagles improved to 1-6.
The first half opened with Winthrop getting on the scoreboard, for a 1-0 lead with 26:57 left to play in the period when Lauren Asher found the back of the net for the unassisted goal.
Megan Busch (2 goals and 2 assists) answered for Coastal with an unassisted goal to even the match at 1-1 with 25:02 until halftime.
The Eagles Lauren Morris (4 goals) made it 2-1 off a free position shot and goal with 22:30 on the game clock.
Coastal knotted the match at 2-2 when
Samantha Courtemanche (3 goals) filled the net off the feed from Busch.
Winthrop made it 6-2, when Morris (8:21 and 2:06), Savanah Paton (5:24), Ellie Marindin (4:37) found the back of the net before the Chanticleers closed out the first half scoring with Busch's (0:54) second goal of the day to trail 6-3 at the intermission.
The Eagles opened the second half with Morris getting her fourth goal with 28:32 remaining in regulation for a 7-3 lead.
Courtemanche tallied her second goal of the day with 23:47 remaining in the game off the Busch dish to make it 7-4 and forcing WU to take a timeout.
Mia Creighton made it 8-4 off the assist from McKenna Blick with 20:14 on the game clock. Olivia Deaver made it 9-4 off the feed from Asher at the 14:55 mark.
Haley Alexander pulled Coastal to 9-5 for her lone goal off the pass from
Lyla Robinson with 13:33 remaining to play.
Winthrop answered the score with two when Asher filled the net on a free position shot with 7:43 to go up 10-5 and Creighton made it 11-5 on the unassisted tally.
The Chants answered with two scores of their own when Courtemanche hit the hat trick with the unassisted goal with 3:07 and
Madeline Bromley gave the final score of 11-7 with 53 seconds remaining off the assist from Robinson.
Defenders
Emily D'Orsaneo and
Anya McSorley each caused two turnovers, while Alexander chipped in with four caused turnovers. Despite giving up 11 goals,
Harley Barrett picked up five saves in the net.
Coastal outshot the Eagles 29-21 overall and scooped up a slight 16-15 advantage in groundballs.
The Chanticleers will return to action on Saturday, March 9, as they will travel to Newark, De. to take on Colonial Athletic Association opponent the Delaware Blue Hens. The opening draw is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
