Newark, Del. – Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team got back in the win column with a 14-10 victory over the Delaware Blue Hens of the Colonial Athletic Association, Saturday afternoon inside Delaware Stadium. The Chanticleers improved to 3-2 with the win while UD fell to 2-4.
Coastal started the scoring at the 23:36 mark when
Megan Busch (three goals and one assist) fed
Jordan Harrell (two goals and two assists), for the 1-0 lead, who filled the back of the net with first of two goals.
Delaware knotted the match up at 1-1 when Mia DeRuggiero (one goal and four assists) scored unassisted with 18:28 remaining in the first stanza.
Harrell followed 35 seconds later with her final goal of the day to push the Chants back in front 2-1. Caroline Farley (three goals) of the Blue Hens evened the match up at 2-2, with the first of the hat trick with 17:18 remaining.
CCU fired off two goals when
Haley Alexander (two goals and one assist) fired a shot between the pipes off the dish from Harrell at 14:45 and
Madeline Bromley (two goals and one assist) put Coastal ahead 4-2 with the unassisted goal.
Delaware answered with two goals when Sarah Bedard scored her lone goal with 7:31 remaining in the first half, and Christine Long evened the match at 4-4 off the feed from DeRuggiero with one minute expiring from the play clock.
With 45 seconds remaining in the first period, the Chanticleers called a timeout to set up the offense.
Samantha Courtemanche scored the first of two free position goals to give CCU a 5-4 halftime advantage.
The Blue Hens opened the second half scoring when Long, 27:56, scored her 16th goal of the season off the DeRuggiero assist in making it 5-5.
Courtemanche (25:03), Busch (23:43), Alexander (21:22), and
Haley Kyger (20:03) would push the lead up to 9-5. Bromley and
Lauren Cremen tallied assists on the final two goals of the run respectively.
UD's Claire D'Antonio (one goal and one assist) and Farley answered with back-to-back goals (16:20 and 13:45) to make it 9-7 Chanticleer advantage.
Kyger would make it 10-7 on a free position goal with 12:44 remaining to play. Busch followed with a woman-down goal to push the lead to 11-7 in favor of CCU. Bromley made it 12-7 with 5:43 on the game clock with Harrell picking up the assist. Busch scored the hat trick goal after Alexander spun through a defender to hit a cutting Busch with 4:01 remaining and a six-goal lead at 13-7.
The Blue Hens closed the gap to 13-10 when Sarah Comstock tallied her first goal of the season with 3:04 left in regulation, Farley and Sydney Rausa would add Delaware's final two goals with 33 and 16 seconds remaining to play.
Sarah McEvoy (one goal) would add the final score 14-10 with one second remaining on the game clock.
The Chanticleers offense held a four-two advantage in free position shots but was outshot 27-24 for the game.
Harley Barrett picked up ten saves while the defense caused nine turnovers. Alexander and
Emily D'Orsaneo scooped up five and three groundballs respectively.
Coastal Carolina will return to action with the start of a five-game homestand when the Huskies of UCONN visit Conway, S.C., Tuesday, March 19. The opening draw is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
