Taylor Posts Another Top-Three Finish at The Hayt

Coastal Carolina men’s golf was hampered by the inclement weather over the final day of play
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. – On a rainy and windy day, that saw the entire tournament field struggle with both the weather and playing conditions and only one team shoot less than +24 for the final round, the Coastal Carolina men's golf team carded a third round 320, +32, to place in eighth overall with a 54-hole team score of 899, +35, at the nationally-touted John Hayt Collegiate Invitational held at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
After rounds of 293 and 286 on a windy, yet sunny Sunday, the Chanticleers were hampered by the inclement weather over the final round of play.
Coastal finished just 10 strokes out of the top four and just one stroke behind No. 37 TCU (898, +34) who ended in seventh-place.
The Chants still finished ahead of No. 21 Alabama (902, +38), No. 9 Auburn (904, +40) and five other teams in the field.
"We didn't handle the conditions very well today," stated coach Jim Garren. "This was one of the hardest days I've seen in college golf in terms of the playing conditions and we let it get the best of us. Today is going to sting. We picked up a couple of nice head-to-head wins but overall this finish isn't very good considering where we were to start the day. It was a great week for Zack, hands down the best performance of the year. Overall, this was a great field."
CCU's Zack Taylor shot a team-low round 74, +2, on Monday to finish in a tie for third-place overall with his 54-hole score of 215, -1 under par. The junior, who posted rounds of 74 and 67 over the two rounds of play on Sunday, totaled 32 pars and 12 birdies over his three rounds of play for the tournament.
Fellow first-year Chant Wes Artac carded a final round 78, +6. Combined with his rounds of 74 and 72 on Sunday, he finished the two-day event in a tie for 21st-overall with his three-round combined score of 224, +8. Artac totaled a team-high four birdies over the final round of play.
Junior States Fort posted rounds of 70, 76 and 84 en route to his 54-hole score of 231, +15, while fellow upperclassmen Luis Ruiz turned in scores of 75, 71 and 89 to end the two-day event with a tournament score of 235, +19. Fort finished in a tie for 55th overall, while Ruiz placed in a tie for 68th.
Freshman Brady Hinkle carded a final round 83, +11, on Tuesday to place in a tie for 84th overall. He posted scores of 84, 76 and 83 over his three rounds of play at the two-day tournament.
Playing as an individual, first-year Chant Connor Newton registered the third-best round of the day by a CCU golfer with an 80, +8. Newton tallied rounds of 77, 76 and 80 to place in a tie for 62nd overall with his 54-hole score of 233, +17.
No. 43 Tennessee (875, +11), the only team to shoot under 304 on the day, took home the team title, finishing 13 strokes ahead of both No. 22 Louisville (888, +24) and No. 29 North Carolina (888, +24).
The Chants will look to rebound and have some better weather when they return to the links for the Mason Rudolph Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt University from April 5-7.
