Taylor and Deneen Post Top-10 Finishes; Chants Shoot Record-Low Round at Championship

Coastal Carolina men’s golf finished as the runner-up in team stroke play to earn the No. 2 seed in match play at the 2019 Sun Belt Championship
Sandestin, Fla. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf team shot a program record-low 18-hole team round of 267, -17 under par, on Tuesday to finish runner-up in the stroke play portion of the 2019 Sun Belt Championship with a three-round team score of 825, -27 under par.
The second-place overall finish gives the Chanticleers the No. 2 seed for match play on Wednesday, April 24, at the 2019 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship at the Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla.
The Chants finished four strokes behind first-place finisher Georgia Southern who topped CCU with a final round 263, -21 under par, on Tuesday to win and earn the No. 1 seed with a 54-hole team score of 821, -31 under par.
Coastal posted rounds of 278, 280 and 267 for its 54-hole team score of 825, -27 under par, and second-place showing.
The Chants' record-low round of 267, -17 under par, was not the only program record set this week at the 2019 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship. Coastal also set the school record for the best 36-holes in a 54-hole tournament at 558, -10 under par, and the lowest 54-hole tournament team score in program history at 825, -27 under par.
"We played good golf today, we just got beat straight up. We did our part today and Georgia Southern just played better. Our mistakes over the first two rounds were the difference," head coach Jim Garren stated. "Our guys fought hard and gave it everything they had. We had great rounds from Zack and Morgan today. It's good to see Morgan get it going again. Luis also put together a very nice day today as well. Now it is time to regroup and focus tomorrow in match play for the championship."
CCU had two players register top-10 finishes in Zack Taylor and Morgan Deneen while four total Chants finished in the top-15 overall on the individual player leaderboard.
Both Taylor and Deneen posted final rounds of 64, -7 under par, on Tuesday to finish in the top-10 overall.
Taylor finished in a tie for third overall with rounds of 71, 68 and 64 for his 54-hole score of 203, -10 under par, which is tied for the third-lowest 54-hole tournament score by an individual in CCU men's golf history. The junior turned in a bogey-free round on Tuesday which saw seven birdies overall, including a streak of five-straight birdies on holes 1-5 to start the day.
The Pittsburgh, Pa. native, finished tied for the tournament lead with a par-4 scoring average of 3.70, -8, and led the Chants with a total of 16 birdies and one eagle over the three rounds.
Deneen capped off his tournament with seven birdies and 11 pars on Tuesday en route to his round of 64, -7 under par, his lowest round of the season. He finished his three rounds of play with a 54-hole score of 206, -7 under par, (73-69-64) to place in a tie for seventh overall. His tournament score of 206 was just three strokes off of his 203 last year in which he won the event and is tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in CCU history.
Deneen posted a team-best par-5 scoring average of 4.50, -6, and tied with Taylor for a team-best 16 birdies overall.
Placing in a tie for 15th-place overall was both Wes Artac and States Fort with matching 54-hole scores of 210, -3 under par.
Artac posted rounds of 67, 72 and 71 for his 54-hole score of 210, -3 under par, posting one birdie and one bogey over his final 18 holes of play on Tuesday. The senior transfer led the team with 38 total pars over his 54 holes of play, while also carding 10 birdies.
Fort turned in rounds of 69, 71 and 70 for his combined three-round score of 210, 3 under par. The junior carded four birdies on Tuesday to finish his three rounds of play with 11 overall. He also totaled 37 pars and led the Chants in par-3 scoring average at 2.87, -2.
Senior Luis Ruiz saved his best round for last, as the senior carded a final round of 69, -2 under par, on Tuesday to move up into a tie for 27th-place overall with his 54-hole score of 214, +1. After rounds of 71 and 74 over the first two days of play, Ruiz was +1 on the front nine before closing out the day with a 33, -3 under par, and four birdies on the back nine. He finished his 54-holes with 34 pars and 10 birdies.
Coastal finished 11 strokes ahead of third-place finisher No. 28 Arkansas State (836, -16) and will take on the Red Wolves in match play on Wednesday morning. Georgia Southern and ULM will play the other semifinal. The winners of the semifinals Wednesday morning will turn around to play for the 2019 Sun Belt Championship on Wednesday afternoon and determine which team will earn the league's automatic berth to an NCAA Regional.
Match play will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT with the two semifinal rounds.
