Seventh-Inning Rally Comes Up Short As No. 8 Cajuns Defeat Chants 5-2

Lafayette, La. – On Friday night, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleer (33-16, 11-11 Sun Belt) put together a seventh-inning rally but came up on the losing end to the No. 8 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (44-4, 22-0 Sun Belt) by the score of 5-2 at Lamson Park.

In the bottom of the first, junior Sarah Hudek gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 2-0 lead with a single into center field off Coastal starter Kaitlin Beasley-Polko.

The junior extended her hitting streak to 12 straight games as her base hit brought around Keeli Milligan and Alissa Dalton who started the Louisiana rally with back-to-back singles.

After Kara Gremillion walked to lead off the top of the second, Bailey Curry added her fifth double of the season to bring around pinch runner Alaina Guarino from second base to give Louisiana a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third with one out, Raina O'Neal and Julie Rawls came around to score on a Lexie Comeaux double to right field for Louisiana's final runs of the game to make it 5-0.

Allison Deville relieved Ellyson in the seventh and Coastal freshman Syndey Guess was able to reach base on an error by Kourtney Gremillion. Sophomore Samantha Sack picked up a single into right-center and moved to second on the throw by Julie Rawls.

Coastal Carolina would chase Deville from the game as they scored their first run of the night on a single up the middle by freshman Mackenzie Beyer.

Milligan picked up the Cajuns' second error of the inning and allowed pinch runner Michaela McAuley to score and make it a 5-2 game.

Ragin Cajun Head Coach Jerry Glasco brought back starter Summer Ellyson but the Chants were able to keep their rally going as they loaded the bases with back-to-back singles from sophomore Courtney Dean and junior Kassidy Smith. Ellyson would then retire the final two batters for her 31st win of the season.

Ellyson picked up the win as she totaled 6.2 innings and allowed no runs on five hits.

Beasley-Polko took the loss and dropped to 21-11 on the season. The sophomore went the distance for Coastal and allowed five runs on seven hits. Over her final three innings, the Leonardtown, Md. native, pitched scoreless softball and allowed the Chanticleers to put together a rally in the final inning of the game.

Sophomores Stavi Augur and Dean had two hits apiece for the Chanticleers. Augur was on base three times and went 2-for-4 with a RBI, a double and a single. Dean went 2-for-4 in the game one with two singles.

The two teams will play game two on Saturday with the first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. ET.
