Seven-Run Fifth Allows App State to Pick-up an 8-2 Victory Over Chanticleers

CONWAY – A fifth-inning grand slam by Appalachian State's (31-21, 13-12 Sun Belt) Ally Walters and her five runs batted in on the day gave the Mountaineers an 8-2 win over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (34-19, 12-14 Sun Belt) on Friday afternoon at St. John Stadium.

In the top of the first, Appalachian State picked up three hits and load the bases off Chanticleer starter Ashley Guillette.  Kaylie Kifer and Haley Stewart had singles, but it was a Walters' line drive single through the left side that scored Kifer and gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Chants mustered a single hit in the first three innings but took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth off Mountaineer starter Sydney Holland. Junior Kassidy Smith led off with a double into right field corner which was followed up by senior Natalie David's fourth home run of the season to give the Chants a 2-1 advantage.

The Mountaineers retook the lead in the top of the fifth as they scored seven runs to go up by the score of 8-2. The inning started with consecutive singles by Megan Walker and Keri White. App State Head Coach Shelly Hoerner played for the tying run as she had Kifer put down a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher Guillette. Guillette misfired her throw to first base as it allowed all runners to advance.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Chanticleer Head Coach Kelley Green went to her 20-game winner in Kaitlin Beasley-Polko, but the sophomore allowed two runners to score. The biggest blow came on Walters' grand slam and her sixth home run of the season.

CCU had chances in both the fifth and sixth innings to add runs, but each time Holland would shut down the Coastal bats and not allow a run.

The righty gave up five hits and threw 94 pitches on the day as she earned her 14th win of the season.

Guillette took the loss and dropped to 12-7 on the year. The Oxford, Ct., native allowed seven hits and four runs with five strikeouts.

For the second consecutive day, David homered and was the Chants leading hitter as the senior went 2-for-4 and two RBI.

Coastal Carolina left eight runners on base in the game, six in the fifth and sixth innings combined.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET. Before the game, CCU will honor its four senior players; David, Guillette, Chelsea D'Avilar, and Alexis Alvino.
