Sun Belt, Coastal Football Receive Extra Yard Gift to Aid Horry County Schools

CFP Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers grant will go to the Rookie of the Year program

CONWAY, S.C. – The Sun Belt Conference, Coastal Carolina University and the Coastal football program are excited to announce that Coastal has received a $10,000 gift from the College Football Playoff Foundation and their Extra Yard for Teachers Initiative program.

As part of the CFP Extra Yards for Teacher's week across the nation, Coastal Carolina University President David A. DeCenzo and Director of Athletics Matt Hogue will present the gift to Horry County Schools' superintendent Dr. Rick Maxey in an on-field presentation during our next home football game on Saturday, Sept. 14 versus Norfolk State.

We are offering a discounted ticket to all school system employees for our home game versus Norfolk State in appreciation for all that they do for the youth in our community.

The $10,000 gift is to benefit the partnership between the University, Coastal Athletics, and Horry County Schools. Horry County Schools will use the grant for funding for a new program they are starting called "Rookie Teacher of The Year".

As with the school system's longstanding Teacher of the Year awards, the Rookie Teacher of the Year nominees would be selected by their peers for the honor. To be eligible for the award, a teacher must be in his or her first three years of teaching in a full-time position, who are currently not eligible for the annual Teacher of the Year program.

In a time when the nation is facing a massive teacher shortage, Horry County would like to celebrate first-year educators who answered the call to teach. We want to celebrate and spotlight these talented and dedicated teachers who have gained the respect of peers and who demonstrate teamwork, creativity, pro-activeness, involvement in campus or district activities/programs, professionalism, pride in school and profession, and above all have a positive impact on students.

The Rookie Teacher of the Year program will begin in January, where schools may select a school-level nominee for the program. From the school-level winners, the Rookie Teacher of the Year selection committee will select five semifinalists in the spring. Teacher interviews will then be conducted and the District winner will be announced in April or May.

The CFP Foundation created the Extra Yard for Teachers Week in 2015 to provide an opportunity for universities, coaches and student-athletes to take part in its mission of elevating the teaching profession through inspiring and empowering educators.

Sun Belt Conference Team's Up with College Football Playoff Foundation for Extra Yard for Teachers Initiative

The Sun Belt Conference and the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation are joining forces once again to recognize teachers via the Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT) initiative throughout the 2019 football season.

Each of the 10 Sun Belt football-playing institutions is receiving a $10,000 grant from the CFP Foundation to use in their respective local communities to recognize teachers for their hard work and dedication and provide classroom supplies and resources.

In addition, Sun Belt institutions will recognize teachers at football games during Extra Yard for Teachers Week (Sept. 14-21) on their respective campuses via pregame and in-game presentations on the field and video boards as well as during live broadcasts on the ESPN family of networks. The conference will also recognize the Extra Yard for Teachers initiative via pregame and in-game presentations during the 2019 Sun Belt Football Championship Game. The second edition of the league's football title game is set for Saturday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. CT/Noon ET on ESPN or ESPN2.

"There is no profession more important than being a teacher. We are pleased to honor and recognize teachers and their roles as educators across our Sun Belt footprint," said Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill. "The Sun Belt truly believes in supporting the CFP Foundation's goal of championing those who put in countless hours to shape, mentor and inspire our student-athletes."

EYFT Week is a nationwide celebration of teachers, led by the CFP Foundation within the platform of college football. Created in 2015, EYFT Week provides an opportunity for universities, coaches and student-athletes to take part in its mission of elevating the teaching profession through inspiring and empowering teachers, as well as creating awareness for the growing EYFT platform.
