Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls at 25th-Ranked West Virginia

Final Box (pdf)

Morgantown, W. Va.. – Claudio Repetto scored a goal and added an assist for the Coastal Carolina men's soccer team, but it was not enough as the 15th-ranked Chants fell to number 25 West Virginia, 5-2.

The game was CCU's fourth consecutive road outing to open the 2019 season and it was the fourth consecutive game against a ranked opponent.

After an assist on CCU's opening goal of the game, Repetto scored on a penalty kick in the 47th minute after a hand ball call in the box on the Mountaineers. That goal cut the WVU's lead to 3-2, but that would be as close as CCU would get.

While the score stood that way for the next 21 minutes, West Virginia mostly controlled the flow of the game as evidenced by its 18-8 differential in shots.

One of the shots finally broke through in the 68th minute on a Tony Pineda goal, and in the 74th minute Pascal Derwaritsch was able to sneak a shot under CCU goalie Alberto Ciroi for the final tally of the match.

West Virginia had six shots on goal and CCU had four. Another major difference in the match was the 11 corner kicks for West Virginia while CCU only had one.

The first half was a defensive battle until Tyrone Mondi took a deep pass from Claudio Repetto down the middle of the field and beat the Mountaineer defense to the ball. He stuck his shot past WVU goalie Steven Teesky for a 1-0 CCU lead.

The score stayed that way for five minutes when the home-standing Mountaineers took advantage of a bad CCU pass along its back line of defense. Robles Grajer picked up the bad pass and without a defender on him, was able to get the ball into the net to even the score at one.

West Virginia was not finished as Grajer scored again just 32 seconds later when he headed in a ball into the net that had been centered from Luke McCormick and just like that WVU led 3-1.

McCormick picked up his second assist in less than a minute when he spotted Andre Muriel Albino streaking to the net from the left side of the goal. He was able blast in a shot and West Virginia led 3-1, a lead they took into the locker room at halftime.

The Chanticleers will be at home for the first time this season when they host Campbell, Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
