Coastal Carolina men’s golf is in a tie for 13th after one round of play

Madison, Wis. – Coastal Carolina men's golf opened up its 2019-20 season with a first-round team score of 300, +12, on Sunday at the 2019 Badger Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

The Chants are in a tie for 13th-place overall with Miami (Ohio) and ahead of both Wofford (301, +13) and Xavier (311, +23) in the 16-team field event.

Only two teams are under par in the season-opening event in leader in round one leader Notre Dame (283, -5) and Kansas (286, -2).

"We had some nerves today and it showed big time. We can't follow up a bogey with another one and that kept happening," head coach Jim Garren said. "On the positive side, we played as we could have and only two teams are under par. We need to put together a good round tomorrow and move up. We have a young group and they should feel more comfortable now that the first round is out of the way."

Senior Zack Taylor paced the Chants on day one with a team-low round of 73, +1, to place him in a tie for 26th. The second-year player carded four birdies on the round, but was hampered by a three-hole stretch midway through the front nine that saw him go triple, bogey, bogey and put him at +4. He bounced back to close out his round -3 under par over this final 12 holes of the day.

Behind Zack Taylor is freshman Seth Taylor who made his collegiate debut on Sunday. Seth Taylor posted a first round score of 74, +2, which included three birdies, three bogies, and one double-bogey along with 11 pars. He is in a tie for 35th heading into play on Monday.

Sophomore Brady Hinkle is in a tie for 55th with his first-round score of 76, +4. Hinkle tallied two birdies and 11 pars on the day and was just one over after the front nine.

Rounding out the lineup on day one for CCU was States Fort and Connor Newton who each carded rounds of 77, +5, on Sunday to place in a tie for 63rd overall. Fort recorded 12 pars, three bogeys and one double-bogey over his first 18-holes of the season, while Newton turned in 13 pars and five bogeys on his first round of the year.

The Chanticleers will return to the links tomorrow for the second round of play at 9 a.m. CT.
