The Chants will start their third year under head coach Jim Garren
Conway, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf team will tee off its 2019 fall season this weekend at the 2019 Badger Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisconsin on Sept. 8-10.
The Chanticleers have been in Wisconsin all week due to campus closing on Monday, Sept. 2, due to Hurricane Dorian.
The three-day, 54-hole invitational will be played on the par 72, 7,294-yard University of Wisconsin Golf Course-University Ridge. Playing in threesomes, the teams will play 18 holes each day with the low four individual scores determining the team score for each round. The tournament will begin each day at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT.
The 16-team tournament field this year includes Abilene Christian, Coastal Carolina, Iowa State, Illinois State, Kansas, Nevada, Miami, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Ole Miss, South Dakota State, UNCG, Xavier, Wisconsin, and Wofford.
"We are looking forward to getting the season started this week. The Badger Invitational is a nice event with a solid field and a very good golf course which is exactly what we are looking for in an opener," state head coach Jim Garren. "We've got several new faces this year so this will be the first time this group has played together. The goal is the same every week. We are looking to get in position to have a chance to win Tuesday's final round."
The Chanticleers will send out the lineup of No. 1 Zack Taylor, No. 2 States Fort, No. 3 Brady Hinkle, No. 4 Seth Taylor and No. 5 Connor Newton this weekend.
Zack Taylor returns for his final season as a Chant after earning Ping All-Region honors last year, in which he was also named the 2019 Sun Belt Men's Golf Newcomer of the Year, tabbed a first-team All-Sun Belt pick and played as an individual at the 2019 NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional in May.
Last season, Taylor led the Chants with a 71.33 scoring average and 21 rounds of par or better, including 12 rounds in the 60s. He tallied five top-five individual finishes, including a runner-up finish at the 2018 Northern Collegiate and a pair of third-place showings at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational and the 2019 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship.
The lone four-year senior on the team in 2019-20, Fort enters his final campaign for CCU as the most experienced golfer on coach Garren's squad.
In 2018-19, Fort posted a 74.10 stroke average over 10 events, tallying 11 rounds or par or better and a season-low round of 68 twice, at the Maridoe Intercollegiate and the Mason Rudolph Championship. He saved his best for last in 2018-19, as Fort posted finished under par in each of the last two tournaments of the spring season at the Mason Rudolph Championship and the 2019 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship.
With the graduation and exhausting of eligibility by Wes Artac, Morgan Deneen, Luis Ruiz, and Daniel Overas, coach Garren will look to several young Chants to compete in the lineup this season.
Hinkle, a sophomore, is one of those young Chants, as he played in six events last year as a true freshman. He posted a 76.28 stroke average over 18 rounds of play for CCU in 2019-20, carding five rounds of par and better including a low-round 70 at the Pioneer Creek Collegiate.
Seth Taylor will make his Chants debut in the opening weekend. A Gaffney, S.C. native, the first-year Chant lettered at Gaffney High School where he led his team to two 5A region championships, a 5A upper state championship, and a 5A state championship. A two-time all-state golfer, he was tabbed the Player of the Year by the Spartanburg-Herold Journal and was recognized as a North-South All-Star.
Newton, another sophomore, will wrap up the lineup for Coastal this weekend. The Auburn, Ala. native played in three events last year for the Chants and posted a stroke average of 76.78 over his nine rounds of play.
