Chanticleers Ready for Carolina Challenge

Coastal Carolina returns to Columbia for second time in three weeks
CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina's indoor track and field team will return to the South Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex for the second time in three weeks as they take part in the two-day Carolina Challenge. The meet begins on Friday, Jan. 31, and will run through Saturday, Feb. 1.
The Chanticleer squad is coming off their first individual Sun Belt Track Athlete of the Week award since 2018 as freshman Melissa Jefferson won the honor for her accomplishments at the Liberty Kickoff.
Jefferson picked up a win in the 60-meter dash she marked a time of 7.55, good for fifth all-time in school history. It was the first time since 2013 that a Coastal Carolina sprinter earned a win in the 60 meters since CCU Hall of Famer Erica Peake took the win at the Virginia Tech Qualifier. Later that day, the Georgetown, S.C., native had a strong showing in the 200 meters where she picked up a second-place finish with a time of 24.87, good for 10th all-time in CCU history.
Both of the freshman's times on put her third and fifth respectively in the Sun Belt this season.
Hesmari Coetzee is coming off an impressive two weeks to start the season. Two weeks ago, on the same South Carolina track during the Gamecock Opener, the senior ran a time of 56.27 in the 400 meters, marking the sixth-best time in school history. Last week at the Liberty Kickoff, Coetzee followed up her impressive time in the same event with a second-place finish and a time of 56.47.
Kadasia Evans' high jump mark at the Liberty Kickoff cleared 1.65 meters to give her a tie for fourth-place, the first time in her career she finished within the top five of any event. The freshman's jump gave her the 10th-best mark in school history and fifth-best in the Sun Belt this season.
