Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Gray earned his first collegiate win at The Grove

COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – Coastal Carolina junior golfer Tyler Gray earned his first collegiate win this week as he shot a 140, 4-under par, to finish in a three-way tie for first-place overall at the Intercollegiate at the Grove hosted by Middle Tennessee at The Grove Club in College Grove, Tenn.

The team finished in fourth-place overall with scores of 284 and 293 for a combined 36-hole tournament score of 577, +1.

Host Middle Tennessee (284-289) and ULM (286-287) finished tied for first overall on the team leaderboard at 573, 3-under par, while Appalachian State (288-287) finished just ahead of the Chants in third-place with a score of 575, 1-under par.

Coastal finished in front of Southern Mississippi (578, +2), Lamar (584, +8), Louisiana Tech (585, +9), Francis Marion (586, +10), Mercer (588, +12), Troy (595, +19), Western Carolina (596, +20), Chattanooga (597, +21), and Western Kentucky (608, +32).

"I am super proud of Tyler. That's a huge accomplishment on a really good golf course. He's really turning into a very solid player and a leader for this team," stated head coach Jim Garren. "Overall, we have to get tougher plain and simple. Two weeks in a row and the same thing at the end. We had a chance to win the golf tournament on the last hole and hit two shots in the water and missed two short putts."

Gray carded a second-round 72, even par, on Tuesday to go along with his opening round 68, 4-under par, on Monday to finish in a three-way tie for first-place at 140, 4-under par. The junior recorded eight birdies, 24 pars, and four bogeys over his 36-holes of play. The win is the first of his collegiate career, while his first-round 68 tied his career-low round as a Chant.

Also posting a top-five finish at The Grove was redshirt senior Zack Taylor who placed in a tie for fifth-place overall with a score of 142, 2-under par, after back-to-back rounds of 71, 1-under par, each day. Taylor again dominated the back nine on Tuesday, as he carded five birdies over the final nine holes of play. He totaled nine of his 11 birdies for the tournament on the back nine and was 6-under par on that part of the course for the week.

Fellow Chants Connor Newton (74-74) and Seth Taylor (71-77) finished in a tie for 29th overall with identical 36-hole scores of 148, +4. Newton posted back-to-back rounds of 74, +2, which included three birdies over each round and a total of 21 pars. After shooting a 71, 1-under par, on Monday, Taylor struggled on the front nine on Tuesday and finished the day with two birdies and 10 pars en route to a 77, +5, on Tuesday.

Junior Brady Hinkle (76-76) carded a second-straight round of 76, +4, to finish in a tie for 56th at 152, +8, while sophomore Gavin Noble (78-78) turned in back-to-back rounds of 78, +6, to end the tournament in a tie for 66th overall at 156, +12.

The Chanticleers will wrap up its fall slate at the Maridoe Invitational next week, Oct. 18-20, in Carrollton, Texas.
