ATLANTA – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team got goals from three different players in defeating Central Arkansas 3-2 in a battle for the Sun Belt Conference lead on Friday afternoon in Atlanta.
It didn't take long for the Chants to break into the scoring column as
Marcelo Lage and
Marcello Jones teamed up for the first goal of the match in the third minute. It was Lage's first goal of the season and the first of his career.
CCU (2-0 / 2-0 SBC) extended its' lead to 2-0 on
Connor Pugh's first career goal in the 13th minute. The assist again came off the foot of Jones.
UCA (1-3 / 1-1 SBC) scored the next two goals to even the score at two. The Bears first goal came in the 18th minute on a Soren Jansen penalty kick. That made the score 2-1 at the half. The Bears second and final goal came in the 68th minute on an Albert Surez goal with Jansen picking up the assist.
The match-winner for the Chants came in minute 73 off the foot of
Ethan Hackenberg. The goal was unassisted and it was Hackenberg's first goal of his CCU career.
The Chants defense was under tremendous pressure the entire match as UCA took 20 shots, with 12 of those on goal. Reigning Sun Belt Conference Defensive player of the Week
Tor Saunders, once again stood tall in the goal, finishing the match with nine saves.
The two teams will meet again in Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. ET.
