Men's Soccer Beats Georgia Southern in Overtime

Final Box (pdf)

CONWAY, S.C. – It took an extra nine-plus minutes, but the Coastal Carolina men's soccer team defeated Georgia Southern 2-1 in overtime to remain undefeated and keep hold of first-place in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Chanticleers (4-0 / 4-0 SBC) didn't take long to take the lead when Marcelo Lage scored in the fourth minute on an assist from Connor Pugh. It was the third consecutive match Lage has scored a goal for the Chants.

The score held until the 81st minute when Adam Davie scored on an assist from Thomas Jackson to even the score. Despite a couple of chances for both teams in the final minute, that scored held up to send the match into the extra period.

Both teams had some open looks in the first overtime period, but it wasn't until Ethan Hackenberg headed a ball into the net on an assist from Thomas Fielding to give the Chants the win with only 33 seconds left in the first overtime period.

"I am very proud of our guys again today," head coach Shaun Docking said. "We really had to fight and scrap hard this afternoon against a very good and dangerous Georgia Southern team."

"It is so pleasing to be 4-0 in this league as we have very good teams from top to bottom capable of beating each other on any given day. This league is beginning to get the respect that it deserves this season which is a credit to all the coaches and players that have the opportunity to play this fall."

CCU dominated most of the game and took 17 shots with eight of those on goal, while the visitors were limited to five shots and two on goal.

Georgia Southern goalie Jose Eduardo Bomfim kept the Eagles in the game with several outstanding stops in goal. He finished the match with six saves.

The Chants will end the regular season on the road with return matches at Georgia State (Nov. 1) and a return match with Georgia Southern (Nov. 7).
